A system where intellect rules and is used to make the world a safer healthier place. (and yes i put as many exclamation points as deserved) ~Fran's Book Love Blog. "Penner's world building is spectacular!" "If you guys love technology, adventure, romance and mystery then this is the book for you!!! Jenetta Penner developed a love of sci-fi at an early age and decided on a whim to read 40 young adult books in the same genre.
Reviews
"Avlyn is of the age where decisions have to be made--career, mate, move out of parent's apartment into your own--big issues. While this is a dystopian society where intellect is the highest good, the plot could make you uncomfortable with our own meritocracy, conflict between emotion and rationality, and what each of us will do to be socially accepted & "fit in"."
"It is a good book and well worth the read, if this is genre you enjoy or your teaching political science classes."
"I'll admit it, I'm a 32-year-old mom who indulges in YA books. "Configured" is a unique world with engrossing characters and a wonderful story that has me ready for more!"
"I cannot wait to read the next book in the trilogy.... although I may have to hold off until the 3rd book is ready too -- this way I can just keep on reading."
"The plot is very dense and could have been explained in greater detail (more pages), but the reader is drawn into an fascinating world."
"The characters were enjoyable, character growth developed throughout the story, interactions and dialogue were realistic and easy to relate to."
"I enjoyed the VR , the sims, the tech, and the whole system in the story."
"Will definitely be reading book 2."

Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice
Based on extensive interviews with Claudette Colvin and many others, Phillip Hoose presents the first in-depth account of an important yet largely unknown civil rights figure, skillfully weaving her dramatic story into the fabric of the historic Montgomery bus boycott and court case that would change the course of American history. The text is supplemented with black-and-white photos, reproductions of period newspapers and documents, and sidebars. While virtually all students know Rosa Parks's story, this well-written and engaging book will introduce them to a teen who also fought for racial justice and give them a new perspective on the era, making it an outstanding choice for most collections.— Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Young People in U.S. History (2001), this inspiring title shows the incredible difference that a single young person can make, even as it demonstrates the multitude of interconnected lives that create and sustain a political movement.
Reviews
"It was finally great to read about a true hero of the bus boycott [Claudette Colvin], who at a tender age stood alone determined to change a situation, she found her people."
"Claudette Colvin deserves her place in history as a hero who fought against segregation and racism."
"This is a great non-fiction book to use with high school English students according to my advanced methods prof. We read this for her class and I found it interesting and the illustrations helpful."
"I enjoyed this book."
"Daughter enjoyed reading this book."
"Fast shipping, book is like described."
"As a result of reading Ms. Colvin's story, I feel enlightened to delve deeper into the movement, as there were so many other "Silent Soldiers" of The Civil Rights Movement, whose contributions have been overlooked against a bigger picture."

The Hidden Village: A Story of Survival in WW2 Holland
Sofie, a Jewish Dutch girl, struggles to adapt to living in Berkenhout, away from her family and friends. Henk Hauer, head woodman, is in charge of building the underground huts and ensuring the Berkenhout inhabitants stay safe. The characters are well drawn and the historical details convincing, not surprising since the author tells us in a foreword that her mother was Dutch and was in Holland during these troubling times. The Hidden Village, however, while just as true to the horrors of the Holocaust, allows the readers to not just be reminded of what has happened but to also be able to immerse themselves into a world of well written fiction. Storytelling is of a superb quality, and she has the ability to bring vividly to life these very hard and brutal times in a clear fashion, as well as the atmosphere in which the Jews had to live in WWII, and all that in a gripping and heart-breaking way within this wonderful tale. Born in Rijswijk, Holland, to a Dutch mother and English father, the family moved to England when Imogen was very young.
Reviews
"During World War 11, a group of Jews hid from the Germans by living in underground huts in this village. This group of rescuers gathered food and other necessities for the hundreds of people who eventually lived in this hidden village. Imogen Matthews used archive materials, letters, photos, interviews, and a book called ‘Het Verscholen Dorp’ by A. Visser which was an account of this village. She also used this book as a way of writing down the stories her own mother told of the years spent in Holland during its occupation by the Germans."
"This is part of the story of the Holocaust I knew nothing about."
"This historically based, yet fictional account of the atrocities suffered during WWII in Holland is exceptionally riveting."
"I found this very hard to put down, every lunch trying to squeeze in 5 more minutes, or to finish the chapter."
"Very interesting to learn how German citizens suffered while Hitler was trying to conquer the world."
"i thoroughly enjoyed this book."
"I really liked the book."
"Great story."

Paper Towns
#1 Bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars John Green crafts a brilliantly funny and moving coming-of-age journey about true friendship and true love. Weeks before graduating from their Orlando-area high school, Quentin Jacobsen's childhood best friend, Margo, reappears in his life, specifically at his window, commanding him to take her on an all-night, score-settling spree. Just as suddenly, she disappears again, and the plot's considerable tension derives from Quentin's mission to find out if she's run away or committed suicide. Margo's parents, inured to her extreme behavior, wash their hands, but Quentin thinks she's left him a clue in a highlighted volume of Leaves of Grass. The title, which refers to unbuilt subdivisions and copyright trap towns that appear on maps but don't exist, unintentionally underscores the novel's weakness: both milquetoast Q and self-absorbed Margo are types, not fully dimensional characters. Green's prose is astounding—from hilarious, hyperintellectual trash talk and shtick, to complex philosophizing, to devastating observation and truths.
Reviews
"Paper Towns by John Green tells the story of Quentin, otherwise known as Q. Q and his next door neighbor Margo used to be best friends and, as they’ve grown up and become high school seniors, they have turned into acquaintances."
"I read this book because I seen the trailer for it at the theater, and thought it looked good. My Thoughts : Margo Roth Spiegelman is an enigma, especially for Quentin."
"It had adventure, mystery, a love triangle, a real page turner that you won't be able to put down."
"I am in awe of this book. I am in awe of John Green as a writer who does not insult the intelligence of his young readers."
"I have sent each one of my two travel companions a copy of Paper Town in hopes that it could kindle (no pun intended) something inside of them."

Desperate, Raine makes choices that could not only tear her and Torin further apart, but lead to the destruction of everything and everyone she loves. Great storyline... K. M. Whittaker "Page Flipperz - Blog"(cairns, qld, AU). Ednah is the author of The Guardian Legacy series, a YA fantasy series about children of the fallen angels, who fight demons and protect mankind. Reviews
"She struggles to make him remember her, but her plans quickly fall through, and when small things come back to him, such as calling her Freckles, she does not know if it is his subconscious remembering or if he is getting his memories back. People are calling her names and vandalizing her lockers."
"**. This book picks up where the first ended and I couldn't have been happier when Torin falls in love with Raine all over again and even begins to slowly remember their time together before the Norns scrambled his memories."
"The risks the main character takes to regain her love add a level of meanness to her and everyone around her."
"She is devastated, Torin doesn’t remember her thanks to the norns and the whole school thinks she is a witch. They are helping her through the days at school and while Lavania is training her as an immortal in the evenings. Unfortunately, she has the norns to worry about, her father’s health and the darkness that appears to be taking over Eirick. The idea focusing on the Norse gods and how they are affecting mortal lives was new and refreshing. Then the author writes a fabulous love story with lots of action and humor thrown in."
"I spent the entire days and read it, and it's so amazing, I couldn't put it down and I immediately bought the 2nd one, and just finished it today and I can't wait to read more when I can buy the set :-) so excited."
"Absolutely love this series!"

Reviews
"Beneath the Skin is an excellent journey into one young woman's struggle to escape a madness that no. child should ever have to endure."
"Well written story that touched my heart."
"I would want to have this book read by adults, but the way certain scenes go makes it so I can't recommend this for teens. My main issue with the book was how graphic the rape and abuse scenes were. I ignored the warning because YA books tend to not get super graphic so they are something I can handle. The book itself progressed slowly, I felt like it took forever to get started so I was having issues, but then I suddenly understood. The author allowed me to get into Sidney's mind set and world."
"When that means Sidney strikes a boy who was bullying her brother at school, there are consequences. She now has to start group therapy with one of her school's popular girls, Adriana. Each of this things are important topics that affect many teens today. He pulled Sidney out of her shell and helped her see the light at the end of the tunnel."
"Only this pain can sharpen my focus, drown out the roar inside my own head.” (7%). This book is a powerful journey through the pain of a abused teenager’s story - her only coping mechanisms, cutting herself and lashing out at those around her. While the story itself is fiction, it's based on real events from Stone’s and her mother’s lives. The worst character I've ever encountered in a book may just be Sidney's mother Susan. It's probably the most real fiction I've read in a long time."

"I'd always preferred the peace and quiet of a good story to the noisy company of other kids." His icy gray eyes were fixed on me with fiery intensity, narrowly assessing me. "It was so strange how fast you could go from walking on a cloud to sinking into the deepest despair. Moods change, like the seasons; the only difference is how quickly everything transforms." "There was something in her eyes that roused a part of me I couldn't control, making me feel like a wild man at the mercy of his desire." "A gust of wind ran over my skin, ominous yet familiar, making me shiver. My breathing grew irregular as his eyes, suddenly as gray as molten silver, searched mine inexorably. Evan's voice enveloped me like a warm mantle as our gazes remained silently entwined, exploring the mystery. ". I didn't want to shed my physical body, even though I was sure that was where the sensations I was feeling were coming from. Or maybe I was afraid that in my angelic form, in which everything was amplified, I wouldn't be able to bear it.I turned on the water in the shower and pulled off my jeans. I leaned my palms against the wall and let the water run down my back. The image of Gemma in the shower came into my mind. I thought about how she'd closed her eyes, the way she'd pushed her hair to one side as the water flowed down her skin . I ran my nose down her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her wet skin. I slid my hand down her side and clasped her flesh, overcome by an unknown desire. The wall cracked under the blow.I shook my head, my hair dripping wet, and ran my hands down my face. Her translations have been published by Random House, Scholastic, Hyperion, Elle, Volo, Harper Collins AudioBooks, Fazi Editore and Disney. Annie has written two young adult books of her own plus a travel memoir.
Reviews
"To start off my review, I just want to say that I enjoyed reading this book sent to me by the author. This translated novel revolves around a normal teenager named Gemma who suddenly encountered a mysterious presence wherein apparently, she's the only who experienced this. After this Angel of Death, Evan, interfered a lot of times with Gemma, she felt connected with him, and is slowly falling in love with him. Actually, all the characters felt like my fictional group of friends, and it was fun hanging out with them while reading this. The characters, the story and the dialogue were greatly crafted with an interesting concept that is enough to pull me into their world where angels of death exist to take away lives, and it felt like they took my life for me to live there."
"I have to admit that I felt a little bad for Peter, but Evan is such an excellent book boyfriend that you fall in love with him right along side Gemma (so what is if he an an angel of death."
"I loved this book, Evan and Gemma are my new favorites in YA."
"I do love the paranormal and all the things that go bump in the night and this book has all that plus add in some savory bad, angst, twists and turns and young romance to keep you on your toes."
"Her life is pretty normal & somewhat boring until she meets this mysterious guy who intrigues her. She almost thinks her creative imagination is getting the best of her on account of reading too many books since no one else seems to see this mysterious boy but her."
"Once I got past the slow part it really came together and was very interesting and was a surprising thrill ride with adventure, romance, and mystery."
"Gemma is the awkward ,out of place girl who finds herself in a world she never thought could exsist. This book is filled with a rock solid world building."

Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution
Publishers Weekly Best Book * ALA Best Book for Young Adults * ALA Notable Children's Book * ALA Booklist Editors' Choice. She witnesses neighbors being beaten to death, her best friend's grandmother's suicide, the systematic degradation of her father, and endless public humiliations. She makes it very clear that the atrocities were the inevitable result of the confusion and fanaticism manipulated by unscrupulous leaders for their own petty ends. ?John Philbrook, formerly at San Francisco Public Library. Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. A child's nightmare unfolds in Jiang's chronicle of the excesses of Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution in China in the late 1960s. In the name of the revolution, homes were searched and possessions taken or destroyed, her father imprisoned, and her mother's health imperiled--until the next round of revolutionaries came in and reversed many of the dicta of the last.
Reviews
"This is an excellent read for anyone interested in what is was like to live in China during the Cultural Revolution as a young teenager."
"It is the story of a bright, talented young woman who later left China, with its Communist principles, behind."
"First of all, Jiang tries to incorporate a love story into her book. Other than that, this is a great book which I recommend everyone reading: afterwards you can show off your knowledge on the Cultural Revolution!"
"Red Scarf Girl by Ji-li Jiang was the first book to make me cry. This book is like Harry Potter but real and not magic. Filled with worry, fear, confusion, and all sorts of miserable and negative things. This is the part in a normal book when I would come back to reality and remember that it's not real. Instead I remember that this was real and this girl who would other wise be brilliant, respected and loved is slowly becoming more and more depressed and lost. The brilliant girl who was at the beginning of the book respected by everyone is bow nothing but a black welp. Red Scarf girl is a true heart warming story that can make anybody's bad day a good one."
"Jiang Ji Li tells her story simply and without rancor as a child experiencing the pain and confusion of a horrendous era."
"Enjoyed reading."
"I do recommend this book to people who are strong and really would like to learn about this era, otherwise I think this book will just tear you down."
"I hope millennials and NFL players will read this book and appreciate the blessings we enjoy in this country, the USA."

"The dialogue among the teens depicted in this story is spot-on and so realistic that when I finished the novel I felt as though I had visited real people."
Reviews
"It just makes me really uncomfortable when I read it and yet it’s in just about every single book I read. It’s not often we see LGBTQ+ characters have a safe place in books and this book definitely creates a safe place without sacrificing the struggles the people in this community goes through. Although it was DEFINITELY tipped towards the fluffy end of the scale, I felt the author did a good job balancing the description of the struggles the characters went through and creating that safe space. Even if they aren’t bisexual, there’s something that just about every LGBTQ+ scale can take away from this book."
"The writing flows naturally and the reader has a full idea of the teen universe and daily life."
"While this doesn't bother Lena, it does make her question her feelings toward Juliet and she realizes that she's bisexual and what she feels for Juliet is love and not the friendship kind of love. This is a very well written story and captures different feelings from both sides of the fence very accurately regarding this topic. This is a young adult book and captures the vibrant language and thought process of today's teens perfectly in my opinion."

The Hate U Give: The Book Everyone’s Talking About
Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. ''As we continue to fight the battle against police brutality and systemic racism in America, THE HATE U GIVE serves as a much needed literary ramrod. --(Jason Reynolds, bestselling coauthor of ALL AMERICAN BOYS). ''Angie Thomas has written a stunning, brilliant, gut-wrenching novel that will be remembered as a classic of our time.''. ''Though Thomas's story is heartbreakingly topical, its greatest strength is in its authentic depiction of a teenage girl, her loving family, and her attempts to reconcile what she knows to be true about their lives with the way those lives are depicted -- and completely undervalued -- by society at large.''. ''Beautifully written in Starr's authentic first-person voice, this is a marvel of verisimilitude as it insightfully examines two worlds in collision. ''Pair this powerful debut with Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely's ALL AMERICAN BOYS to start a conversation on racism, police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement.''. Starr's struggles create a complex character, and Thomas boldly tackles topics like racism, gangs, police violence, and interracial dating. ''Thomas has penned a powerful, in-your-face novel that will similarly galvanize fans of Kekla Magoon's How It Went Down and Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely's All American Boys.''. ''The story of Starr Carter, a 16-year-old who sees her childhood best friend fatally shot by a police officer, is compelling, thought-provoking, and conversation-enabling.
Reviews
"I had originally said I was not going to read this book, I didn't know how well I would like it, and I don't tend to get involved with things that can make life at work harder for me. I hated reading it, I cried my eyes out, Thomas did such an amazing job of making a horrible action into beautiful fiction that made you feel like you were right there. This was really refreshing to read because so many books, YA especially make parents out to be monsters that don't care, that aren't there for their kids. I mean it is like a troupe or something for these stories and it isn't actually the norm and gets annoying to read, so this book did an amazing job with the parents and family. All around though this story just floored me, it gave me a perspective I have never considered before, offered insights into a world I am not a part of, and I loved every minute of it."
"I'm more than a little ashamed to admit that I'm a privileged white woman in a tiny, primarily white community who has never really even given a ton of thought to the Black Lives Matter movement. I'm still a privileged white woman in a tiny, primarily white community, which means that I will never really be able to understand what the black community feels, but I'm trying, and I'm trying so much harder than I ever did before. There were plenty of moments in the book that made me chuckle a little that helped break up the heaviness of the book (especially when DeVante, Seven, and Starr start making fun of white people, because, let's be honest, everything they said was true), but the weight of the truth this book made me see hit me like a ton of bricks. Instead, I have been living inside my safe little bubble where I believed that ALL police officers are good and ALL police officers are just trying to do their jobs and racism is really not THAT bad in our country. I never allowed myself to see that SOME police officers are downright racist, and SOME police officers are scared of young, black men simply because they are young, black men, and people of color ARE treated differently, and ANY racism IS that bad. The blame was definitely there, but Starr also acknowledges that there are still a lot of good police officers who don't agree with the actions of their colleagues, and although she helped me to understand the sentiment behind rioting, she also acknowledges that the damage done by rioting is usually to her own community only. And underneath it all, Angie Thomas makes it clear that Starr's community had its own problems from within that were not the fault of the police at all."
