Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business
Originally published in 1985, Neil Postman’s groundbreaking polemic about the corrosive effects of television on our politics and public discourse has been hailed as a twenty-first-century book published in the twentieth century. “I can’t think of a more prophetic, more thoughtful, more necessary – and yes, more entertaining – book about media culture.” –Victor Navasky, National Book Award-winning author of The Art of Controversy “All I can say about Neil Postman’s brilliant Amusing Ourselves to Death is: Guilty As Charged.” –Matt Groening, Creator of The Simpsons “As a fervent evangelist of the age of Hollywood, I publicly opposed Neil Postman’s dark picture of our media-saturated future.
Reviews
""Amusing Ourselves to Death" is an amazingly written and well-argued book. Today, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney have bite-sized debates where one side speaks for 1 minute and the other side gets a 30-second rebuttal. Clearly, the people then were different from the people now in terms of mainstream intelligence. The reason, Postman argues, is that the people in Dickens' era were children of "The Age of Typography," and the people today (us) are the children of "The Age of Show Business," or "The Age of Television." This book was written in 1985, but don't be fooled; it still wields enormous relevance today -- The chapter titled, "Peek-a-Boo-World" as well as the "Information-to-action-ratio" theory outlined in it are particularly pertinent regarding the modern-day use of the internet, especially with portable laptops, tablets, and cellphones."
"The coverage this book got after 2016 US primaries has further fueled the interest of those who are looking for gratification to find arguments that confirm to their views of the contemporary world. Under the influence of a biased yearning to find a way out of the 2016 US political landscape, this book is a panacea; it categorically puts the blame for this presumed gaffe on the evolution of show business in the coeval society. All that this book does is present an aha moment, something on the lines of ‘I knew it!’ Otherwise, any serious explorer of this topic should start with 1984 by George Orwell or Brave New World by Aldous Huxley instead of picking up this text."
"Others have sounded the alarm, Endangered Minds by educator Jane Healy, Phd, and more recently, Resetting Your Child's Brain by pediatric psychiatrist Victoria Dunckley, MD."
"Very informative in content, even for an older book."
"The type of media itself profoundly changes us apart from the content of the media."
"Love, love, love this book."

Thunderstruck
Set in Edwardian London and on the stormy coasts of Cornwall, Cape Cod, and Nova Scotia, Thunderstruck evokes the dynamism of those years when great shipping companies competed to build the biggest, fastest ocean liners; scientific advances dazzled the public with visions of a world transformed; and the rich outdid one another with ostentatious displays of wealth. [Signature] Reviewed by James L. SwansonIn this splendid, beautifully written followup to his blockbuster thriller, Devil in the White City , Erik Larson again unites the dual stories of two disparate men, one a genius and the other a killer. Late in the 19th century, Europe's most brilliant theoretical scientists raced to unlock the secret of wireless communication.Guglielmo Marconi, impatient, brash, relentless and in his early 20s, achieved the astonishing breakthrough in September 1895. An alchemist and peddler of preposterous patent medicines, he killed his wife, a woman Larson portrays lavishly as a gold-digging, selfish, stage-struck, flirtatious, inattentive, unfaithful clotheshorse. It alternates the story of Marconi's quest for the first wireless transatlantic communication amid scientific jealousies and controversies with the tale of a mild-mannered murderer caught as a result of the invention. The eccentric figures include the secretive Marconi and one of his rivals, physicist Oliver Lodge, who believed that he was first to make the discovery, but also insisted that the electromagnetic waves he studied were evidence of the paranormal. As he and his unsuspecting lover attempted to escape in disguise to Quebec on a luxury ocean liner, a Scotland Yard detective chased them on a faster boat. In an era when wireless has a whole new connotation, young adults interested in the history of scientific discovery will be enthralled with this fascinating account of Marconi and his colleagues' attempts to harness a new technology.
Reviews
"This one was a bit of a disappointment compared to his others, but only because it takes until the very last bit of the book to tie everything together."
"This Is another superbly researched and fascinating book by Erik Larson."
"In both works, the author exhibits his formidable talent for drawing material from primary sources to construct a readable narrative that "makes history come alive.""
"He takes historical events, does exhaustive research, and produces a well documented book that reads like a novel."
"I really enjoyed the intertwining story of Marconi and radio along with the capture of a murderer well done."
"As usual, Erik Larson presents two compelling stories in one powerful book."
"Read it."
"I became more interested in Marconi and his wireless than in the scoundrel at the center of the story."
