Involving such key figures of the l930s as Frida Kahlo, Albert Einstein, Henry R. Luce, William Randolph Hearst, Ayn Rand, and Franklin Roosevelt, Fallingwater Rising shows us how E. J. Kaufmann’s house became not just Wright’s masterpiece but a fundamental icon of American life. One of the pleasures of the book is its rich evocation of the upper-crust society of Pittsburgh–Carnegie, Frick, the Mellons–a society that was socially reactionary but luxury-loving and baronial in its tastes, hobbies, and sexual attitudes (Kaufmann had so many mistresses that his store issued them distinctive charge plates they could use without paying). Architectural historian Toker (Pittsburgh: An Urban Portrait) approaches the building as a tense but fruitful collaboration between Wright's genius and the encouragement given it by his patron, Pittsburgh department store magnate E. J. Kaufmann, whom Toker credits with being "almost... the coarchitect" of the house. According to legend, Wright dallied for months after receiving the commission, then drew up the plans in just two hours, as his client, the Pittsburgh department-store magnate E. J. Kaufmann, was en route to Wright's studio to check on his progress.

"Despite its encyclopedic scope and thorough research and analysis, the book ironically fails to really get at the essence of the creative process that resulted in Fallingwater -- especially the contributions of EJ Kaufmann."
"I gave it an unusually high rating and mentionend how much I enjoyed the book and liked owning it and spent time discussing all the books for Amazon last night."
"I love it!!!"
"or should I say, "Wonder FALL", as this is the must have for all Frank Lloyd Wright fans."

"Packed full of information and symbolism, especially for us graveyard sightseers looking for a story."
"Although I enjoyed this book entirely, I would have appreciated it more if the pictures were in color."
"Maybe it’s because we don’t bury our dead in my family – we have them cremated and scatter the ashes somewhere meaningful – or maybe I’ve just read too many gothic novels with confrontations in family crypts, but graveyards have always intrigued me. In fact, Understanding Cemetery Symbols has several chapters explaining the history and trends of burial in America, including a rundown of different types of cemeteries and descriptions of the different words – such as burial ground, churchyard, graveyard, etc."
"I was thrilled to be able to read and add to my collection, Tui Snider’s recent publication on Understanding Cemetery Symbols. One notable chapter discusses what symbols can represent, as well as have different meanings on a variety of levels for people. For instance – I dislike roosters, so I’ll never have an affinity for them because one attacked me, but for some people these animals represent vigilance. Tui further details the distinctive types of cemeteries you’ll encounter, as well as the differences between coffins and caskets. She provides answers to basic questions of why husbands are buried on the left and why headstones face east."
"The geocentric nature leaves out many of the ethnic nuances that would be found throughout other regions of America."
Two architects, William Van Alen and Craig Severance (former friends and successful partners, but now bitter adversaries), set out to imprint their individual marks on the greatest canvas in the world--the rapidly evolving skyline of New York City. Author Neal Bascomb interweaves characters such as Al Smith and Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt, leading up to an astonishing climax that illustrates one of the most ingenious (and secret) architectural achievements of all time. A former literary agent and former St. Martin's editor, Bascomb centers his narrative on two architects, William Van Alen and Craig Severance, who schemed to outdo each other in the race to pierce New York City's skies with, respectively, the Manhattan Company Building at 40 Wall Street and the Chrysler Building on East 42nd Street-only to be beaten by a third team hired to construct the Empire State Building (at Fifth Avenue and 34th). While this story is most often told as a sentimental paean to "progress" rather than a bitter corporate feud, Bascomb gives his tale a fresh sense of capitalist drama in his evocation of the nascent worlds of skyscraper engineering, architecture and construction-and real estate speculation with returns projected at 10%. Though the desire to spike the landscape with ever-higher structures dates back millennia, skyscraper one-upmanship accelerated in the twentieth century.

"Definitely the most interesting is the Chrysler Building."
"It portrays the race between the Chrysler Building and the Bank of Manhattan Trust Building (aka 40 Wall Street, current The Trump Building), and when that is settled and done the Empire State Building moves in to beat them all."
"Almost like reading a person's biography, with a myriad of supporting actors."
"I bought this with the idea of pleasure reading as I like a diversion from the daily drawing board."
"Informative, quirky and a little old fashioned narrative..good insight to reasons why these buildings were built, and history at the time....would recommend it."
"Again a follow up on the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge which has been of great interest to our family."
"Higher documents an important part of NYC history along with the egos of men in positions to exert their power."

Find Best Price at Amazon"The book includes well-written profiles and beautiful photography for 34 landmark sites from Charleston to the Upcountry. Being essentially a coffee table book of well-known sites, with little professional appeal, anything more than about $40 for a new hardback would be too much."
"This book is very well written with great photos of a very beautiful state."
"These Mansions rival Newport RI, but are located in some of the most obscure areas."
"I like this book because it combines color photos with a good general history of the homes, and the residents of those homes."
Best Asian Architecture
Zen temples, the famous tea ceremony, formal gardens, the use of wood, paper and other materials in the form of screens and floors—all have evolved over the years to create a varied, yet indisputably unique style. "We're not going to redo our home in a Japanese style, but sitting and reading this book and enjoying the pictures is like a trip to the Orient."
"I am very interested in any ASIAN INTERIOR/EXTERIOR DECOR books and books on FENG SHUI, CONTEMPORARY IKEBANA, and MINIMAL DESIGN."
"There are extreme examples of that in this book. It is not an in depth analysis of great design, but more of a picture book of modern attempts. So, in that sense, the book is good since it has extreme examples of both good and bad design."
"There is definitely some magical inspiration in here, but to my personal preferences for how magical architecture and design can really be, I would only call this book "okay". Modern stuff is always a mixed lot, and that's good, but if I've going to have an architecture, design book on my shelf, well, this one lost me half way through."
"Some of the examples depicted so beautifully and discussed so shrewdly in this volume are rooted strongly in Japan's history, such as an old farmhouse relocated to Tokyo and fitted into an urban neighborhood."
"The Japanese are so good at re-interpreting their traditional architecture; furthermore this books illustrates that ability quite well... Perhaps a few details would've made it a touch (one star) better..."
"This book provides total eye candy for design enthusiasts."

"The more popular, better preserved castles like Alnwick which is featured in the Harry Potter movies has two pages of information. The book starts out with a 20 page introduction that gives some nice information about castles, a timeline over the centuries, how they were built and what the different types are. For just about every castle in the book they give you background information, structural info, telephone number, website, and location."
"I used this book to pick out some other British single-castle guidebooks from Amazon U.S. and U.K., such as Hever Castle (where Henry VIII & Ann Boleyn met) with its modern Tudor village."
"I agree that this book doesn't provide an exhaustive amount of information, but I found it to be a great place to start when narrowing down my list of castles to visit on vacation."
"This is because while it served its purpose for protecting England from the Scots, the most interesting thing about it is its history with Bonnie Prince Charlie and Mary Queen of Scots. We have big clunky books with glossy pictures and lengthy histories and then tons of pamphlets and brochures that we pick up every time we're over. And many, like the ruins shown in the books, you can simply hike over and walk around. We've been to Hever, Bolton, Alnwick (prounounced "annic"), Barnard, Bamburgh, Brough (pronounced "bruff"), Brougham (pronounced "broom"), Clifford's Tower, Windsor, Edinburgh, The Hermitage, Pembroke and many others."
"Glamis and Fyvie, for example, are undoubtably two of the most splendid architectural marvels in all of Britian, yet are covered in the space of one small page(and I mean small, the page size is approximately 5 x 7 inches). I guess the photos (one inch by two inches no doubt) of the interiors of the castles could be another book?"
"I read this book first on my Kindle, and decided I liked it so well, I needed the physical book."

"The numerous viaducts on the railway were built in the 1860s using cast iron columns braced with wrought iron tie bars, with the joints carefully separated and reinforced, unlike those of the later Tay bridge. The disaster was caused by premature failure of the joints, despite the known hazards of this form of construction, as described in Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silvery Tay: reinvestgating the Tay Bridge disaster of 1879."
