Thinking Volleyball
Thinking Volleyball goes beyond the Xs and Os and skill instruction by offering in-match strategy and insights from legendary coach Mike Hebert. In his discussion of the international game, Coach Hebert not only takes you on an exploration of the X’s and O’s of teams from around the world, but also makes observations of what he believes are the psychological principles of these teams. The next two chapters, Promoting a Positive Gym Culture and Strengthening Team Trust are where I think this book separates itself from the many other books written on volleyball. As an observing and opposing coach, these are also the areas in which I thought Coach Hebert excelled with his championship-level teams. It is the lynch pin that holds a team together.” Mike takes the reader into his team meetings and the activities he did with his teams in order to build team trust, including role playing, showing movie clips, and team readings. “Others that have written analysis have not come as close to the essence of coaching women's volleyball as Mike has in Thinking Volleyball . Unlike other volleyball coaching books of its kind, it digs far deeper, and comes very close to the heart of coaching excellence. During his career, he coached the University of Pittsburgh men’s and women's teams, the University of New Mexico women's team, the University of Illinois women's team, and the University of Minnesota women's team. He was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Coach of the Year in 1985 and served as the president of the AVCA from 1987 to 1990. Hebert was a part-time member of USA Volleyball’s coaching staff for over 30 years and was honored with their All-Time Great Volleyball Coaches Award.

"I have a doctorate and three master's degrees, and I still find my brain swimming when I try to make it through some of the scientific info. After three or four months, I found I wasn't improving my times much, so I decided to give Daniels another go-round and bought the new edition. That pace, of course, would have been faster had I done just a 6k, so there is evidence in my experience that shows that this program works if you give it a chance. If you don't have one, go get one, either by signing up for a local 5k or going to a high school track and pushing yourself for a mile. And it has to be a decent effort on your part, not just a leisurely jogging time, otherwise this program will be useless to you. If you've been running but not necessarily pushing yourself hard, then start on Phase 2, page 180. Personally, I would recommend reading chapter four in which Daniels talks about each of these paces and what you're trying to accomplish with them, but it's not absolutely necessary for the training. Just be careful when you do so that you're not moving up too early--injuries and burnout can easily happen. Personally, I have read the whole book, and I'm glad I have, but I would recommend doing so after you have your running plan worked out."
"Excellent scientific background."
"It may not be "the" book for "a" beginning runner, but it is probably safe to add providing you are a runner - or have a goal to be a runner and improve in time to come. If you are more seasoned runner, and enjoy reading about running, you will love this book."
"This is a great book for those who like to run and write an intelligent running program."
"I love ready running books and books on training."
";-). After Daniels' spent decades researching running and coaching world-class athletes, he has explained his approach and training plans in this excellent book. I've ran for years by following plans from military trainers and the runnersworld site, then got this book after deciding that wasn't enough."
"This book does a very good job helping setup a training plan for your planning race distance, and provides good information on several aspects of running as well."
"Dr. Jack Daniels takes the guesswork out of what paces you should train at for each specific workout type."

Until Proven Innocent: Political Correctness and the Shameful Injustices of the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case
And it continues to captivate the nation: the Duke lacrosse team members‘ alleged rape of an African-American stripper and the unraveling of the case against them. As well reported in detail by respected legal journalist Taylor and Brooklyn College historian Johnson, the facts of the case speak for themselves: rogue prosecutor Mike Nifong willfully disregarded evidence of the boys' innocence; Duke administrators hung the team members out to dry; much of Duke's faculty and the media rushed to assume guilt in the racially charged case (the New York Times comes in for special opprobrium). But these facts are embedded in repetitiously hammering home the basic points, sarcasm and ranting against the political correctness (i.e., obsession with the race-class-gender triad) of academia and the media. The authors challenge the academic credentials of the black faculty members who attacked the team and criticize the Times 's Selena Roberts for choosing to live in lily white Westport, Conn. In total contrast, the closing chapters offer balanced, tautly argued discussions of, and remedies for, the central problems: prosecutorial abuse, the frequency of false rape accusations and academic groupthink. In their vivid, at times chilling account, the authors are contemptuous of prosecutor Mike Nifong, whom the North Carolina legal establishment disbarred for his by now well-documented misconduct.
Reviews
"This is a well told, documented, detailed look at the Duke Lacrosse case where 3 Duke students were prosecuted/persecuted because of their race and their background."
"Ultimately, the case was dropped and in an unusual move, the boys were declared innocent without a trial(usually these cases are dropped for lack of evidence and had this happened in this case, a large proportion of the population of Durham would have insisted the boys used money to buy justice)."
"Made all the more powerful by recent events Until Proven Innocent shows how easy it is for the media and interested parties to create a lynch mob in search of victims."
"This is a story of the obvious ignored, aggravated by police and prosecutors with an agenda, and a cowardly and complicit college administration influence by "protestors" armed with signs and slogans but no facts."
"Great read and we'll written and researched."
"I have not yet read the book."
"I thought that the authors went a bit overboard claiming Nifong developed a hate for lacrosse players because UNC law school overlooked the practice fields."

A Clear Blue Sky: A remarkable memoir about family, loss and the will to overcome
He was a gifted and natural athlete, with potential careers ahead of him in rugby and football, but he eventually chose cricket and came to build a career that followed in his father’s footsteps, eventually reaching the pinnacle of the sport and breaking the record for most Test runs in a year by a wicketkeeper.
Reviews
"Obviously, what happened in his past has made him who he is today; the death of his father being somewhat of a key point in his timeline, sadly coming at the same time as his mum's serious illness. I found the way he compared and contrasted the way cricket was played and run during both his and his father's times; including some very interesting politics. The rest of the book is more a tribute to the people who got him where he is today, his mum and sister to name the main players here and he downplays his own part quite admirably at times although his courage and tenacity screams out from between the lines."
"It is worth reading for this alone, bit there is also some very good stuff about David's character and influence on his son as well as a pretty decent account of Jonny's own progression in cricket. Personally I wasn't; I thought Jonny's assessments of his fellow players was fair and although he is possibly generous at times I like that he refuses to give salacious or damaging accounts of people but concentrates largely on his own game and attitude to it. For example, Ian Bell at one point is described thus: "He'd sometime hold the final position of a shot, as though posing for a sculptor who was about to start chipping away at some vast block of stone," and Andrew Flintoff's arm around Brett Lee's shoulders was apparently "an act of Corinthian compassion.""
