"Mediterranean Diet For Beginners by William Watts Review 3/28/17. Do you want to live a healthier lifestyle for years to come? We have changed so much over the years and it shows in what and how we eat due to the lifestyle changes and being on the go that fast food has taken over. After reviewing this cookbook, I see that many of the ways that I have changed my cooking habits run along the same lines as this but I also saw that there are so many ways more that I can enhance the way that I eat and my cooking methods. But more than that you will be able to understand the concept of eating for healthier reasons and the benefits you can reap from this type of eating. For people with IBS problems it is easy to modify many of the recipes to eliminate what we can’t eat, there are so many ways to prepare the foods left in our diets that will be close."

Find Best Price at Amazon"She started this right before the holidays and was concerned about missing holiday dinners...my answer was that of Dr. Fung's: have your dinner, enjoy it and get back on track the next day. She chooses now to have one "cheat meal" each week and for 4 weeks the next morning her blood sugar was higher...but got lower each week and after 4 weeks her morning after a cheat meal her blood glucose was normal! I started on the diet myself and found similar results with the exception of my cheat day...maybe because of my age, I do not get into ketoses for days after my cheat day which slows down my weight loss. I have still managed to lose 16 pounds in 3 weeks effortlessly with the exception of the 2 day sugar hangover like my daughter experienced. I have since found a product that will put you into ketoses in a day, but it is very expensive and the taste is...not so great. No added expenses...in fact my food bills are much lower. I highly recommend this book and highly recommend you read through all the facts and figures he goes over...it makes managing your weight and your diabetes much easier over your lifetime without much thought once you know how your body reacts to food. She has found her weight has stalled and after some investigation I realized why...she had been taking MCT oil, about 3 tablespoons a day in pill form (she doesn't eat breakfast and doesn't like the taste of coconut) and she stopped it at the same time her weight loss halted. I found that although the craving weren't horrible, I missed my sweets. I will also warn you that if you don't use MCT oil in many of the recipes and sub coconut oil in it's more solid form, the results are not nearly as good. The MCT oil helps me get right back into ketosis after my cheat days without buying that expensive, horrible tasting powered drink I was using."
"Dr Fung makes it clear that the calories in/ calories out model of weight management has proved to be a colossal failure, and explains why, covering the nuanced realities of hormones, fasting, carbohydrates, fats, sugars and sleep and the roles each plays in your health. Topics include: ▪ the heritability of (a tendency for) obesity. ▪ The role of insulin in weight gain. ▪ Benefits of fiber to gut health and how that translates to faster weight loss. ▪ Probiotics—any reader interested in health should be familiar with this new field."

Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number. Taubes ( Bad Science ), a writer for Science magazine, begins by showing how public health data has been misinterpreted to mark dietary fat and cholesterol as the primary causes of coronary heart disease. Taubes cites clinical evidence showing that elevated triglyceride levels, rather than high total cholesterol, are associated with increased risk of heart disease-but measuring triglycerides is more difficult than measuring cholesterol. Noted science journalist Taubes probes the state of what is currently known and what is simply conjectured about the relationship among nutrition, weight loss, health, and disease. Beginning with the history of Ancel Keys' research into the relationship between elevated blood-cholesterol levels and coronary heart disease, Taubes demonstrates that a close reading of studies has shown that a low-cholesterol diet scarcely changes blood-cholesterol levels.

Find Best Price at Amazon"He explains the mechanisms that lead to these diseases, and punches holes in the accepted wisdom behind recommended "healthy" dietary guidelines. I had recently been diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) and my doctor had put me on a course of medication to bring it under control. However, the research indicated that insulin also had other effects on the body, one of which was to cause the kidneys to reabsorb more water back into the blood stream. At the same time, Taubes pointed out that blood sodium levels, which conventional wisdom claimed was the cause of that excess water (again, without a great deal of evidence to support it), was quite easily regulated by the kidneys and passed out of the body in urine. This made a lot of sense to me, and so I started a diet that the book indicated would be healthier: one without starchy food, but with fish, meat, dairy products and green vegetables. It seemed that the combination of the diet and my hypertension medication was giving me low blood pressure and dehydration symptoms. Taubes' studies had indicated that HDL levels had a strong inverse correlation with coronary heart disease incidence (that is, the higher the HDL levels, the lower the risk of coronary heart disease), while LDL had a weak, positive correlation, so I wasn't too concerned about the increase in LDL. It might be more accurate to say that it's a book about the science of diet, nutrition and health, and Taubes is happy to acknowledge that we still need to do a lot more research on the subject, but without any preconceptions. Indeed, throughout the book, Taubes points out the lies, errors, misinterpretations and failed critical thinking that led to the current dietary recommendations of a predominantly low-fat, high-carb diet."
"In her seventies she was put on a statin for elevated cholesterol and became someone I barely recognized; argumentative, irritable, forgetful, poor coordination and very depressed. Three years ago, as my own cholesterol nudged up a bit, but still within traditional normal range, I did not hesitate to comply with my doctor's suggestion to begin a statin (Lipitor). I was strictly avoiding all saturated fats and dietary cholesterol, cooking with the supposedly "healthy" polyunsaturated oils and always choosing fat-free or low-fat dairy products. I was aware that I was having a marked increase in short term memory problems, and my joints were getting so troublesome I was unwilling to do the exercise my doctor kept harping about to keep my weight under control. Then the came the real shocker.......the most consistent risk factor for developing heart disease, as far as diet is concerned, is the intake of carbohydrates. For those interested, here are some recommendations: Natural Health & Weight Loss,Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food,The Statin Damage Crisis,The Modern Nutritional Diseases: And How to Prevent Them : Heart Disease, Stroke, Type-2 Diabetes, Obesity, Cancer,Cereal Killer,The Great Cholesterol Con: The Truth About What Really Causes Heart Disease and How to Avoid It and The Primal Blueprint: Reprogram your genes for effortless weight loss, vibrant health, and boundless energy Four of these are written by MDs - informed, well educated, science background people working with current research information. Information I uncovered left me shocked about how manipulative Big Pharma is as far as pressuring doctors to use their drugs, (complete with "incentive" packages that can only be compared to flat out bribery) about how they fund their own studies and then get to interpret their own results to be sure they are favorable, and/or they can choose to fail to publish anything negative. The power the pharmaceutical industry and the agribusiness has on such supposedly trustworthy institutions such as the American Heart Association, the FDA and the NIH is not to be believed. So sad for all of us.The food pyramid is absolutely wrong for heart health, weight management and avoiding type 2 diabetes. It is not focused on the use of statins (I found that informations in other related books listed above) - rather, he is making the point that while we have been concentrating on fats as the cause of obesity, diabetes and heart disease, it has really been the shift toward more carbohydrate and seed oil consumption for the last 60 years. I will not know my lab numbers for several months until my next check up, but I can report that my body aches have lessened, I have more energy, my short-term memory is better and my depressed mood has vanished. I bought two extra copies of Taubes book and will be giving them to both my Family Practice doctor and my Endocrinologist."

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease challenges conventional cardiology by posing a compelling, revolutionary idea-that we can, in fact, abolish the heart disease epidemic in this country by changing our diets. Drawing on the groundbreaking results of his twenty-year nutritional study, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., a former surgeon, researcher, and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, convincingly argues that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease, but also reverse its effects. Caldwell Esselstyn has directed pioneering research demonstrating that the progression of even severe coronary heart disease can often be reversed by making comprehensive change in diet and lifestyle.“. —Dean Ornish, M.D, founder, president and director of Preventive Medicine Research Institute and author of Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease. His focus on the healing powers of proper nutrition on diseased coronary arteries has now proven right, raising another unthinkable notion—that heart patients can cure themselves.”. —Bernadine Healy, M.D., former Director of the National Institutes of Health. “A hard nosed scientist shows us his secrets for successfully cleaning the rusting arteries of so many patients - and it doesn't even hurt.”. —Mehmet Oz, M.D., coauthor, You: The Owner’s Manual. Based on decades of research, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn has shown not only how to prevent heart disease, but how to reverse it-even for people who have been affected for many years. Find Best Price at Amazon"I have a gym in my garage, with pull-up tower and padded floor and TV/DVD player. In other words, I was in pretty good shape and thought I was OK. On April 8, 2013, I had just finished exercising. I noticed a slight numbness in my left arm. Told my wife to take me to the new heart hospital, conveniently located about 1 1/2 miles from my house. 45 minutes after walking into the ER, I was being wheeled into my room with 2 stents installed. The Cardiologist said that in my main artery, towards the center of my chest, I had 100% blockage. In the other main artery, on the other side of my heart, there is 50% blockage. I went to Amazon and looked for books on cardiovascular disease. My wife and I read the reviews and decided to give it a try. Since we started the plant eating lifestyle, she doesn't have stomach aches anymore. A friend of mine watched the Forks Over Knives documentary with his parents and they all decided to try it. At the start of the plant diet, his blood sugar was 253. After one week of plant eating he dropped 120 points! It works Yesterday my Cardiologist said that I am doing so great that he doesn't need to see me for 6 months!"
"I accidently stumbled upon Dr. Esselstyn's research and recommendations when I was bed ridden with severe blood pressure which was getting worse by the day and I knew that it was just a matter of limited time before I expire."
"Using the information in Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, I now eat a plant-based diet, which I've been on for a couple of months now. My rule of thumb is this: If it had a mother and a father (beef, chicken, turkey, fish, etc. Since I've been eating plant-based foods only -- and there's a LOT to choose from -- my blood pressure has dropped, I've lost about 14 pounds, I sleep far more soundly, my thinking is clearer, I have more energy, etc. UPDATE: I've now lost 20 pounds, and another blood draw revealed that my cholesterol level has dropped 30 points."
"This book is very direct in its message and the science behind the benefits of a plant based diet cannot be disputed after reading this book. I was very lucky because my Cardiologist recommended that I read this book, understand the science and follow the eating plan because I was not a good candidate for statin drugs."

I am giving it a 4 star even though I highly recommend the book because I wish there were less sections on all the human ailment conditions and MORE on just Paleo - how to eat Paleo, how to make quick easy Paleo foods."
"So far the autoimmune eating plan has been a tremendous success for helping the constant pain I had in my feet."
"If your sick, tired, or are ready to make life changes using nutrition this book is for you. Diane is an excellent writer, it well written, it very hard to get "bored" with the book it has beautiful photos."
"I've had 2 friends buy the book since I bought it so they could start incorporating paleo into their lives."
"I wrongly assume Paleo was all about Crossfit and getting to eat as much greasy meat as you want (a la Atkins Diet years ago, yuck) which was such a far cry from the vegan/vegetarian way of eating food for health and nutrients that I had been doing. Not only does Diane teach (for the first half of the book) about ways to make the paleo way of eating enhance and even transform your health, but she also includes several different meal plans based on your health needs (autoimmune repair, fat loss, athletic performance, etc) and recipes for those plans."
"She's now cooked several meals from this cook book and also loves that the recipes are fairly easy to follow and are delicious."

Find Best Price at Amazon"I've been a devotée of Carolyn's blog for a long time, and this book is a worthy amplification of her daily posts. She starts with a primer on ingredients with which the reader will want to stock a low carb pantry, frequently used equipment to make your ketogenic journey easier, and sample menus. Basics such as broths, marinades, rubs, syrups and sauces start off the culinary love fest. From there, many creative breakfast options are explored, including items many think are verboten on a keto diet, such as waffles, pancakes, fruit syrups, and coffee cake. Bread substitutes follow, with such delights as skillet "cornbread," Apple Cider Donut Bites, flatbread, scones, and crackers. The appetizer chapter gets very uptown, with such selections as Grilled Zucchini Rolls With Goat Cheese and Pesto, Bacon and Sundried Tomato Truffles, and Smoked Salmon Pinwheels. Seafood is well represented, with many out-of-the-ordinary offerings, like Broccoli Drunken Noodles With Shrimp and Fish Saltimbocca. Although Carolyn knows her stuff on every one the preceding subjects, her real forte is in amazing her readers with a never-ending parade of delicious desserts. Here, she thrills the reader with mousses, cheesecakes, sauces, ice creams, cookies, and brownies. This tome would be a superb gift for the low carb wanna-be to get him/her excited about the possibilities of maintaining a keto lifestyle."

Building upon his critical work in Good Calories, Bad Calories and presenting fresh evidence for his claim, bestselling author Gary Taubes revisits these urgent questions. Persuasive, straightforward, and practical, Why We Get Fat is an essential guide to nutrition and weight management. Award-winning science journalist Taubes follows his Good Calories, Bad Calories (2007) with this eminently more reader-friendly explanation of the dangers of dietary carbohydrates. If the USDA dietary guidelines—recommending that highly caloric grains and carbohydrates comprise 45 to 65 percent of daily caloric intake—are so healthy, why, he asks, has obesity among Americans been on the upswing? After explaining in layperson’s terms the science that debunks the idea that weight control is a matter of burning more calories than one consumes, Taubes offers an alternative viewpoint: no carbs. from one’s diet is not necessarily a new one, Taubes does present compelling supporting evidence that many, if not all, people should consider at least severely limiting carbohydrates in their diet. Taubes has done us a great service by bringing these issues to the table.” -Dennis Rosen, The Boston Globe “Less dense and easier to read [than Good Calories, Bad Calories ] but no less revelatory.” -Jeff Baker, The Oregonian “Taubes’s critique is so pointed and vociferous that reading him will change the way you look at calories, the food pyramid, and your daily diet.” - Men’s Journal “Important .

Find Best Price at Amazon"So I will just tell y'all what I told my sister: If you want to learn once and for all WHY carbs are "so bad", and WHY we shouldn't eat sugar, and why "diet and exercise" doesn't actually work for losing weight, then read this book. He gives excellent examples, complete with some photos that seem to tell all... discusses nature vs. nurture, discusses historical changes in human diets in various ethnic groups around the world and the resulting changes in the populations' health. I read the book twice before doing anything because I kind of needed to experiment on my own one last time and gather my evidence to be able to make arguments to convince both myself and those around me that this "stuff" about "carbs are bad" really is true! - plus French toast, coffee cake and banana bread for breakfast (or cold cereal), sandwiches (or fake meat burgers) for lunch and more pasta for dinner. I first read the book in the summer of 2013, and immediately was intrigued, grossed out, upset, puzzled, argumentative, in a state of disbelief and just plain confused. I ran a marathon that fall (at my heaviest weight ever... after having trained for 6 months and hardly budged a pound) and continued my path of eating carbs and sugar until I picked it up again in summer of 2014 (I'm a teacher, so my life proceeds in years bookended by a summer). I decided that in order to "clean out my system" of crazy carb-and-sugar-related hormonal issues, I'd need to just bite the bullet and chew the meat. (I had been up as high as 165 a few months before that...I had already started cutting out some sugar just by virtue of re-reading The Book!). Like a big 3 or 4 egg omelet with red peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes and hollandaise sauce! For snacks, I'd have blackberries with real whipped cream with vanilla and a touch of stevia added in. Some weeks I dip under, sometimes as high as 143, but usually after I had some pasta or a bunch of garlic bread. I still eat chicken, because I still can't figure out how to get enough protein without the meat products. Lastly, let me mention that I helped my 16 year old son follow this plan and lose weight from 225 lbs."
"Other reviews explain the gist of this book: Carbohydrates make you fat and sick; remove carbs from your diet and you'll lose weight and feel better. I was about to do the same but I recalled a passage late in Taubes's book in which he says, in effect, every BODY is different and it might take months, even years, for YOUR body to repair itself after a lifetime of eating carbohydrates. Then the weight loss would plateau and nothing would happen for a week or two. Be patient, this diet does indeed work."
"I knew plenty of people carrying extra pounds who exercised a lot and who didn't appear to eat any worse than I did (as a thin person), but I figured they must. I thought, well if it is inarguable than if I go read this Biochemistry, Fifth Edition: International Version (hardcover) book sitting on my bookshelf it will say the same thing. Fatty acids will not be released into the blood stream to be used as energy if the glucose level is high. Thus it is logical to conclude that if you eat a diet that causes your blood sugar to frequently be high, all energy you consume that is not immediately needed will be stored in your fat cells and will not be released. And in contrast if your blood sugar is stable and you can access that stored energy you will not be hungry and won't overeat. However when I pulled out the Biochem book it says, "Muscle retains glucose, its preferred fuel for bursts of activity...In resting muscle, fatty acids are the major fuel, meeting 85 percent of the energy needs." If you are trying to lose weight, and are doing so by keeping your blood sugar stable, which is releasing fatty acids into your blood stream, and you want those fatty acids to be used, versus having your body (ie muscles) crave glucose, then intense exercise will not help you. Cut your carbs, drop significant amounts of weight (probably feeling crappy in the transition, but resting muscles can use the fuel better anyway so crashing on the couch is fine till you get used to it and end up having more energy than before). If you read vegan arguments they make many of the same claims that Taubes does (better cholesterol levels, weight management, etc). Experiment on myself (finger pokes here I come), and have increased anxiety about what I feed my kids--especially the pasta, bread, fruit and sugar loving one."

Find Best Price at Amazon"However, in light of T. Colin Campbell's unprofessional attack on this book, I believe I must speak up to share my story and the good health that has resulted in my following the Atkins plan. Since following the plan outlined in this book, I have lost weight, my arthritis has improved substantially (particularly in my neck and shoulders) and my dry skin (which 2 dermatologists had diagnosed as rosacea) has disappeared. What disturbs me further about T. Colin Campbell is that he has clearly put out a call to his vegan followers to come to the Amazon site and give bad reviews of this book, as he posted this nonsense on his webpage. Contrary to their ravings, the Atkins diet recommends lots of vegetables, a conservative amount of dietary protein and good fats."
"The weight loss is so fast that in a matter of DAYS my stomach had shrunk (can attribute to gastric bloating or water weight loss) and my pant legs were looser on me. I can actually fit in a pair of skinny jeans I outgrew 2 years ago (Thank you baby weight. I used to roll my eyes when people would rant about losing weight because I thought that all diets were BS. I had heard of the Atkins diet years ago but upon mentioning it to my mother she quickly insulted the diet like many others before, and I never gave it a second thought."
"I went for the low-fat, whole grain, portion control approach; and stuck to it pretty well. In more than seven months I lost 17 pounds and was miserable and frustrated the entire time. For breakfast I have been making 2 egg omlettes with frozen veggies and cheese. Dinner is some kind of grilled or broiled meet with asparagus etc. Shoot me but I really enjoy a glass of wine when I'm done with my day, (or at least my driving). I respect other people's right to choose, and right to write more mainstream diet books."
"It worked well for me and it let's you fine tune a difficult diet."
"Book and diet have been very good to me."

When you walk into an ER and the doctors remember you and know how to treat you off of their memory it is pretty sad. My other friend no longer clears his throat that he did repeatedly for 10 years. in fact, after three months of being on type O strictly if I have something with corn starch my body and my friend's body reacts immediately...head pressure, sinus pressure it is crazy. Not all avoid foods will my body react to dramatically but there are key ones it will and I am like I should not have eaten that. I love pizza with just a little olive oil, crushed garlic, feta, spinach, no sauce, kalamata olives, maybe some red onions...my favorite...before I loved cheese pizza but not no more. My body literally craves type O food it is absolutely mind blowing. I bought the app on my iPhone so when in the grocery store I just quickly look up an item as type O can have mushrooms but some mushrooms are on my avoid list so I just click on the app as I can never remember which one and know immediately what to buy and what not too."
"I first found this book in high school and my mom said I was an A blood type so I concentrated on vegetarian foods. I was happy to do this because it was in the 90's and all my teen magazines promoted low fat and vegetarian diets and of course, I wanted to be like the models. He was so sure that I had it, he sent me to another hospital in another town to have the test retaken because he thought the staff was bad at the first place. Of course, dietetic school said this was a fad diet so I went on a dietary guidelines plan. 'Fast forward a year out of school, I discovered the paleo diet and my whole world was better. My mom was managing a health food store at the time and she had blood type supplements on her shelf. He loves protein shakes and I don't push meat on him because I know your body will naturally like what it needs. I saw 5 OBGYN's and I told them all my theory that I was reacting to the blood of the baby and they all thought I was nuts. After I delivered I still believed the reason I was so sick in pregnancy was because of the blood type difference. Years later I read in one of Dr. D Adamo's books that he supports that theory of the most difficult pregnancies are usually type O mom's with A babies because they are opposite in dietary needs."
"I advocate the diet and the book."
