On Becoming Baby Wise: Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep
For over 20 years, On Becoming Babywise has been the de facto newborn parenting manual for naturally synchronizing your baby’s feeding time, waketime and nighttime sleep cycles, so the whole family can sleep through the night. Practical discussions then focus on broad and niche topics including feeding philosophies, baby sleep problems, baby scheduling challenges, nap routines, sleep training multiples, baby sleeping props, Colic and Reflux and many other dimensions which impact breast feeding schedules, bottle feeding tips and baby sleep training. 1) Taking care of baby and mom. 2) A timeline of what to expect and when. 3) Baby Sleep Training Problems and Solutions. 4) Monitoring Your Baby’s Growth. 5) Healthy Baby Growth Charts. My residents report a positive difference in the confidence of new mothers who work with this plan compared to those who do not. They consistently produce babies who are healthy, content, and who sleep through the night at an early age. "Since being introduced to the principles of Babywise, I have been convinced of its effectiveness in establishing sleep patterns and in decreasing the frequency of problems associated with infant feeding." This is the current and completely revised & updated version of On Becoming Babywise (the 5th edition, February 2012). It has a new chapter, several important revisions, the latest in medical updates, and is 19% longer than the former version. In becoming one of America's leading infant management guides, On Becoming Babywise has continued to improve its methods and practices throughout its 30 years and this latest version is the result of all the best over the last three decades. The Babywise method continues to gain global recognition for its common-sense approach to parenting a newborn. and co-author Gary Ezzo which helps parents successfully and naturally synchronize their baby's feeding time, waketime and nighttime cycles. Rather, our larger objective is to help prepare minds for the incredible task of raising a child. Your baby will not care if his head rests on designer sheets or beside Disney characters, nor is your success tied to his wardrobe or bedroom accessories, but rather to the beliefs and convictions that will eventually shape your parenting experience. It is our opinion that the achievements of healthy growth, contented babies, good naps, and playful wake times, as well as the gift of nighttime sleep, are too valuable to be left to chance. We realize there are a number of parenting theories being marketed today, most of which come gift-wrapped with unrealistic promises and unnecessary burdens. Spend time with relatives and friends who follow the Attachment Parenting style of infant care. The Appendices section in On Becoming Babywise contains charts, worksheets, and additional information relating to infant care. And while 70% of our mothers are still breast-feeding after six months, the national average encourage to follow demand feeding without any guidelines is only 20%. The authors demonstrate how order and stability are mutual allies of every newborn's metabolism and how parents can take advantage of these biological propensities. In particular, we note how an infant's body responds to the influences of parental routine or the lack thereof. Examine carefully the alternative theories and approaches, and specifically observe the end results. The best evaluation of any parenting philosophy, including Babywise, is not found in the reasoning or the logic of the hypothesis. " As family physicians and a husband-wife team, we are often asked questions related to parenting and the general care of children.

The Fast Metabolism Diet: Eat More Food and Lose More Weight
On this plan you’re going to eat a lot. Phase I (Monday-Tuesday): Lots of carbs and fruits. Phase II (Wednesday-Thursday): Lots of proteins and veggies. Phase III (Friday-Sunday): All of the above, plus healthy fats and oils. By keeping your metabolism guessing in this specific and deliberate way, you’ll get it working faster. Complete with 4 weeks of meal plans and over 50 recipes – including vegetarian, organic, and gluten-free options – this is the silver bullet for the chronic dieter who has tried every fad diet and failed, the first time dieter attempting to kick her metabolism into gear, and anyone who wants to naturally and safely eat her way to a skinner, healthier self. If you’ve got a slow metabolism, you’re storing—instead of burning—and more of your food ends up stuck to your thighs and belly as fat. In the book you talk about the importance of switching up what you eat and how it can help you lose weight. And by eating the right nutrient-dense whole foods on the right days and at the right times, that’s exactly how you’ll get your metabolism burning fast and hot, like it should be. The book is the product of 20 years of clinical experience, of helping people lose weight and keep it off. Each phase of the diet—and the specific foods within that phase—sets off precise reactions in your body, coaxing it to unlock and burn fat. A "calorie" has nothing to do with your weight or metabolism; it's actually a unit of measure—the amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree Celsius! With The Fast Metabolism Diet , you'll learn healthy eating habits that will improve your physical and mental well-being, no matter how much weight you need to lose. There's plenty of flexibility for working around food allergies or sensitivities, and any other restrictions imposed by medical conditions. The diet lists healthy portion sizes too—you’ve got to fuel that metabolism. The Fast Metabolism Diet book includes more than 50 super-simple recipes—including family favorites like my Slow-Cooker Chili and Pepperoncini Pork Roast—that you can tailor to your preferences and cooking style. By the time you hit your goal weight, you'll have built exactly the habits you need to live a balanced, food-loving life.

"I know it may seem a bit early to post a review, but wanted to do so now for two reasons; first, I am excited by my results so far - I have already lost 9 pounds - and second, I was dismayed by the inaccurate review (V. Canfield) that deterred me from trying this diet program months ago. I have lost (and gained back) weight on at least three different programs and know I will lose weight with Weight Watchers if I really work at it and am very patient - but I knew it would take a long time and lots of deprivation to lose all that I need to lose to improve my health. I have a friend (a tiny, little friend who needed to lose about 20 pounds) who had lost weight on the FMD and she loved it. Then I read V. Canfield's review and it gave me the excuse I was looking for - I told my friend that the diet was a starvation program it would be unhealthy to eat so few 'calories'. She was surprised and told me that she never got hungry and had a hard time eating all of the food on the program. I lost 3 pounds in two weeks and then I gained it all back - plus one more. I find it very sad that V. Canfield's inaccurate representation of the program (the calorie counts artificially assume that you can only eat from the cook book, chooses some very lean recipes and then ignores that veggies are unlimited) review has turned so many people away from this program. I have been on the FMD program for 9 months now (except for the period between Thanksgiving and New Years Day) and have lost 95 pounds! Then I started eating on the maintenance plan (basically phase 3 with the food from all the phases thrown in) and I continued to lose weight - just more slowly. Beginning Thanksgiving week, I started eating holiday foods - so sugar, corn, wheat etc. At first, I actually lost 8 pounds after T'giving, so I started feeling a bit bullet proof, obviously I had cured my metabolism and could now eat whatever I wanted, I thought. By Christmas time I was eating enough sugar that I was beginning to retain fluid, feel pain in my joints and have indigestion - all things that disappeared on the program. I gained back 5 of the 8 pounds I lost right after Thanksgiving and it has taken me a week to get rid of the sugar again - it is incredibly addictive! He gained back 8 pounds before he decided he really preferred the way he felt on the program - so he is still eating with me most days."
"The first weeks I didn't realize that the fruits you could eat on days 1 & 2 (watermelon) could not be eaten on days 5 and 6. Anyway... in spite of all of my imperfections with the diet I lost 18 lbs. The weight stayed off for several months until recently when I began eating too much sugar etc again and I gained back 4 lbs, but I am back on the diet and confident I will lose the 4 lbs and then some."
"If you DON'T want more energy, DON'T want to sleep like a rock every night, DON't want to loose weight, DON'T want to clear up health issues, skin problems, blood pressure issues, bowel problems, then great, don't get this book. However, I made these changes for 3 months and went off it because I was super busy at Christmas and didn't have time. I will live like this the rest of my life happily if I can feel this good all the time."
"Now I actually enjoy the food better than stuff from my old diet, my taste buds have changed I guess, but pizza (one of my old favorites) just doesn't taste good to me anymore, in fact I really don't enjoy it at all."
"As a life long dieter, this book is so smart!"
"I feel prepared to live a long, health conscious life now."
"Losing weight thats all that counts."
"Great diet.....works and you don't go hungry."

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM): Premenopause: Balance Your Hormones and Your Life from Thirty to Fifty (What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About...(Ebooks))
Learn how natural progesterone and changes to your diet and environment can balance your hormones, eliminate premenopausal symptoms, and make you feel better-all without surgery, antidepressants, or prescription hormones. If so, you may be experiencing symptoms of premenopause. The authors recommend natural progesterone cream to balance your hormones, eliminate premenopausal symptoms, and make you feel better.
Reviews
"At 44 years old, I've been struggling with health issues for the past 6 or 7 years - fatigue, joint pain, weight-gain, bloating, insomnia, digestive problems (colitis and constipation), increased sensitivity to synthetic fragrances and chemicals, skin conditions (keratosis pilaris and tinea versacolor), painful lumpy breasts, brain fog, and irritability. It shows how our hormones begin fluctuating much earlier than that, in our 30s and 40s, and how that affects many aspects of our health, including every single symptom I've been experiencing since my mid-to-late 30s. Second, the book offers comprehensive suggestions for finding balance that include diet, vitamins, movement, stress-reduction, increasing one's joy, etc. I love that the authors have written this book to provide information and encouragement, not to sell a specific product. I am amazed and disappointed that none of my health care providers even mentioned hormonal imbalances or premenopause throughout the several years I asked for help. I lied - my naturopathic doctor did mention that I appeared to have estrogen dominance, but her approach was to address diet first as that can have a big impact on hormones. The authors clearly point out that, in the beginning, using progesterone cream can increase the symptoms of estrogen dominance as the body adjusts to the proper balance of hormones. I am about to re-read both my notes and the pertinent chapters soon as it's time for me to adjust my dose of progesterone cream and to see what other holistic changes I can make to improve my health, feelings of wellbeing, and enjoyment of my life."
"Super interesting book."
"Still a bit skeptical that diet and other natural remedies can do all they say they can, but willing to try some things suggested in the book."
"Nice book loaded with lots of info."
"Every woman in their 30s needs to read this book."
"This book is a wealth of knowledge of the big black hole of premenopause that no one knows about...including most Drs."
"I have had symptoms for years and been a victim of clueless doctors."
"I used progesterone as recommended and feel like I have been given new life."

Less Medicine, More Health: 7 Assumptions That Drive Too Much Medical Care
The general public harbors assumptions about medical care that encourage overuse, assumptions like it’s always better to fix the problem, sooner (or newer) is always better, or it never hurts to get more information. Drawing on his twenty-five years of medical practice and research, Dr. Welch notes that while economics and lawyers contribute to the excesses of American medicine, the problem is essentially created when the general public clings to these powerful assumptions about the value of tests and treatments—a number of which are just plain wrong. “Avoiding medical jargon, Welch speaks directly to the layperson and focuses on certain assumptions that have increased consumption in a market-driven society; some of which have become so ingrained by popular media that refuting them seems downright scandalous… Welch’s words, though wise beyond money, border on sacrilege in a country of generally healthy people who have developed an expensive health-care habit and who are expected to support a lucrative health-care industry. Welch’s conversational style makes his prescription for better health an easy pill to swallow.”. — Booklist , starred review. “A bright, lively discussion of the excesses of medical care to which patients often unwittingly go due to certain false assumptions… Welch demonstrates the flaws in these assumptions. “Gil Welch's latest book shows us exactly how too much medical care can be harmful and even deadly.
Reviews
"I wish I wouldn't have read this book. I started reading the book when my 80 year-old mother went in for major back surgery. I breezed through the first four chapters during her five hours of surgery and two hours in post-op care. The tone of the book was witty, so I was chucking and nodding my head as I read about data overload, U-shaped curves, the general uselessness of screening, the harm that false alarms can cause, the analogy of types of cancers to barn-yard animals: cancer that will never cause a problem are turtles, cancers that can be fought are rabbits, and cancers you can do nothing about are birds. Then he talked about needless surgery due to back pain, and how the majority of the time it doesn't work. But I felt better when I read the statement: "Back surgery should only be done on patients who don't have back pain". I started reading again a few weeks later only to begin Chapter 7 and the assumption: It's all About Avoiding Death."
"I love this book!"
"Conversational and accessible, Less Medicine More Health is an excellent fly over of our dysfunctional health care delivery system."
"I appreciate Dr. Welch's counterpoint to the general assumption in American society that doctors are always right, more testing is a good thing, and doing something is better than doing nothing."
"We do not have "health care.""
"This is the third book in a series of books either authored or co-authored by Welch making the argument that we suffer potentially serious consequences from overdiagnosis and overtreatment. The central points Welch makes in all of them are important ones, for both our personal health and the country's fiscal health: overtreatment is rife, dangerous, and hard to avoid."
"Excellent."
"It's a little technical but since it was recommended by a doctor I'm going to finish it."

The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma
“Essential reading for anyone interested in understanding and treating traumatic stress and the scope of its impact on society.” —Alexander McFarlane, Director of the Centre for Traumatic Stress Studies A pioneering researcher transforms our understanding of trauma and offers a bold new paradigm for healing in this New York Times Science bestseller Trauma is a fact of life. Praise for The Body Keeps the Score “In this inspirational work which seamlessly weaves keen clinical observation, neuroscience, historical analysis, the arts, and personal narrative, Dr. van der Kolk has created an authoritative guide to the effects of trauma, and pathways to recovery. A must read for mental health and other health care professionals, trauma survivors, their loved ones, and those who seek clinical, social, or political solutions to the cycle of trauma and violence in our society.” —Rachel Yehuda, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and neuroscience, director of the Traumatic Stress Studies Division at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY “This is an absolutely fascinating and clearly written book by one of the nation’s most experienced physicians in the field of emotional trauma. “Breathtaking in its scope and breadth, The Body Keeps the Score is a seminal work by one of the preeminent pioneers in trauma research and treatment. Van der Kolk, the eminent impresario of trauma treatment, who has spent a career bringing together diverse trauma scientists and clinicians and their ideas, while making his own pivotal contributions, describes what is arguably the most important series of breakthroughs in mental health in the last thirty years. Here we see not only how psychological trauma also breaks connections within the brain, but also between mind and body, and learn about the exciting new approaches that allow people with the severest forms of trauma to put all the parts back together again.” —Norman Doidge, author of The Brain That Changes Itself. “ The Body Keeps the Score articulates new and better therapies for toxic stress based on a deep understanding of the effects of trauma on brain development and attachment systems. Bessel van der Kolk may focus on the body and trauma, but what a mind he must have to have written this book.”. Its deeply empathic, insightful, and compassionate perspective promises to further humanize the treatment of trauma victims, dramatically expand their repertoire of self-regulatory healing practices and therapeutic options, and also stimulate greater creative thinking and research on trauma and its effective treatment. The body does keep the score, and Van der Kolk’s ability to demonstrate this through compelling descriptions of the work of others, his own pioneering trajectory and experience as the field evolved and him along with it, and above all, his discovery of ways to work skillfully with people by bringing mindfulness to the body (as well as to their thoughts and emotions) through yoga, movement, and theater are a wonderful and welcome breath of fresh air and possibility in the therapy world.”. “In The Body Keeps the Score we share the author’s courageous journey into the parallel dissociative worlds of trauma victims and the medical and psychological disciplines that are meant to provide relief. “Bessel van der Kolk is unequaled in his ability to synthesize the stunning developments in the field of psychological trauma over the past few decades. —Ruth A. Lanius, MD, PhD, Harris-Woodman chair in Psyche and Soma, professor of psychiatry, and director PTSD research at the University of Western Ontario; author of The Impact of Early Life Trauma on Health and Disease. Interspersed with that narrative are clear and understandable descriptions of the neurobiology of trauma; explanations of the ineffectiveness of traditional approaches to treating trauma; and introductions to the approaches that take patients beneath their cognitive minds to heal the parts of them that remained frozen in the past. “When it comes to understanding the impact of trauma and being able to continue to grow despite overwhelming life experiences, Bessel van der Kolk leads the way in his comprehensive knowledge, clinical courage, and creative strategies to help us heal. Dr. Van der Kolk offer a brilliant synthesis of clinical cases, neuroscience, powerful tools and caring humanity, offering a whole new level of healing for the traumas carried by so many.”. Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., is the founder and medical director of the Trauma Center in Brookline, Massachusetts.

"Frankly, nothing really worked until I discovered - and applied - the somatic (body) techniques espoused by van der Kolk, and other luminaries such as Peter Levine, Pat Ogden, and Eugene Gendlin. The only way to ‘communicate’ with this pre-verbal system is through the body, which can signal to the brain stem that it is OK to begin the process of unfreezing the emotional paralysis that has plagued us for decades. UPDATE 2018: One of the treatments that Bessel van der Kolk mentions in his book - MDMA - was recently granted ‘Breakthrough Therapy’ status by the FDA for phase 3 trials. This is because the phase 1 and 2 trials were so successful, that nearly 70% of participants no longer had PTSD after just 3 MDMA sessions (most of these participants had suffered PTSD for decades)."
"Psychiatrist, professor, world-class researcher, and traumatologist Bessel van der Kolk MD requires no introduction to trauma psychotherapists. Familiar with major reviews of PTSD psychotherapy outcomes research, I know that research support for body-oriented approaches to treating psychological trauma psychopathology is thin at best, and such treatment models simply do not have the research validation of either EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and PE (Prolonged Exposure), neither of which are especially body-focused. J. Interlandi's excellent article anticipating publication of this book - "A Revolutionary Approach to Treating PTSD" (New York Times Magazine, 2014.05.22 - available online) - initially supported my fears that for some inexplicable reason van der Kolk was now promoting some treatment model for which we have little confirming research. Yet the account of van der Kolk's therapy work in Interlandi's article is gripping. (I've been here before, reading van der Kolk's own accounts of his work.). Van der Kolk's critique of CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy - a general class of therapies) and PE (E. Foa's exposure therapy model) is withering and correct: neither really work. Because as a trauma treatment professional I'm well aware of what the trauma treatment outcomes research actually says. Van der Kolk's new book has many virtues. Parts One and Two (102 pp) provide a substantial review of the neuropsychology of trauma's impact on a person. I've long thought that much writing on treating psychological trauma seems to miss the point: trauma memory is what causes the problem. As he does throughout the book, van der Kolk offers fine stories about clients who have experienced exactly what I've seen happen in my clients, making excellent use of what cognitive research tells us: people understand things best through narratives. Psychological trauma therapy is complex, but we are now well prepared to launch into the book's core content - Part Five (154 pp), "Paths to Recovery". Van der Kolk tells an amusing and self-deprecating story about his advanced training experience, in which Puk was able to provide a strong corrective to his approach to clients. Van der Kolk's thoughts on self-empowerment for those in recovery from psychological trauma will be invaluable to any trauma psychotherapy client. Van der Kolk shows us how. Organization -. * 6 pp: prefatory praise by peers and related luminaries (interesting comments from some important people in the field); * 2 pp: Table of Contents; * 356 pp: actual text; * 4 pp: Appendix: Consensus proposed criteria for developmental trauma disorder. * 3 pp: Resources. * 4 pp: Further reading. * 51 pp: Notes. * 21 pp: Index."

"We highly recommend it as this book was indeed a game changer with out little ones and being happy in our family. I remember that the audience was full of QUIET, contented babies and I wondered if they were all sedated. The premise is that human babies are born 3 months BEFORE they are really developed because of the size of their heads. Therefore, the fist 100 days of their life is virtually a "fourth trimester" in which the baby needs constant vigilance and caring. He offers "cuddle cure"... 5 steps done in sequence to calm a baby and simulate life in the womb: Swaddling (firmly), Side/Stomach, Ssshhhing, Swaying, Sucking. Author: Harvey Karp. Publisher: Bantam Dell. Copyright: 2002. Genre: Parenting/Childcare. Pages: 260. Date Read- 5/21/09 to 5/26/09. p.100. The FASTEST way to succeed in stopping your baby's cycle of crying is to MEET THEIR LEVEL OF INTENSITY. Only after your screaming baby pauses for a few moments can you gradually slow your motion, soften your shushing and guide them from frenzy to soft landing. These talented people pay close attention to the vigor of ther 5 "S's". p.125. 1st S- Swaddling. This TURNS on the calming effect by stopping the Moro reflex (hand jerking/flailing) that helps them to pay attention to the other S's. In a 1986 study by Tiffany Field, massaged babies gained 47% more then babes who did not have the same touch. Warm the room, dim the lights, play soft music. Always try to keep one hand in contact with the skin and talk to them about what you are doing and what your hopes are for their life, or sing a lullaby. Bicycle their legs then firmly push both knees to their belly and hld them there for 20 seconds. Massage the tummy in firm, clockwise, circular strokes - starting at their right lower belly, up and across the top of their tummy and ending at their left lower side (this traces their colon and intestines). 5."
"When my baby arrived, I was able to instantly soothe him because of what I learned reading this book and that made me feel so much more calm and confident as a new Mom."
"@Alex Atterbury said this better than i can, so i'll just copy and paste: "The problem isn't that the advice is bad, because it's excellent and very practical."
"My husband's parents would cringe whenever they saw us wrap our daughter in swaddling blankets, but we knew it was what she needed and it worked every time."
"In fact, I just finished watching Dr. Karp explain the entire book in a six-minute spot on a daytime TV show (found for free on the Internet)."
"I got tired of the author constantly mentioning the theory of the missing fourth trimester."

What a bargain, The dental work was going to cost well over $4,000.00 Think I'm excited, you will be too if you use this info to take tooth health into your own hands! I do consider the book informative, inspiring and altogether helpful. I have read both your books, and found them both informative and interesting. I purchased your cure tooth decay book and appreciate all the info that has opened my eyes to this nutritional healing. The great thing about this book is that it allowed me to take control over problems that I had once felt I had little control over no matter how hard I tried.

"I have a toddler who went to see the dentist and I was pretty sure she was going to need work done on her front teeth. The other is still struggling, but the bottom part of the tooth is is white and shiny. Before I would have said the two front teeth were in the same state of decay, but now the left one is markedly better. Very little processed food (an occasional cracker or bowl of pasta). 1-2 cups of whole raw milk (I purée it with banana and freeze it and call it ice cream because she doesn't like milk that much). Bone broth chicken potato soup - I buy a rotisserie chicken from Costco each week. We eat all the chicken and then I take everything left over and boil it in my crock pot for 48 hours. At night she takes 5 ml of fermented cod liver oil. The others looked like they might be "arrested", meaning the decay was halted and he would feel comfortable waiting and watching on those teeth. You boil them and dry them and then put them in a banana smoothie)."
"My 8 year old daughter has been plagued her entire life by consistent tooth decay. By 8 years old she has had 19 fillings, 6 root canals with silver caps and 5 extractions. I started buying only grass fed meats, cheese and eggs. I gave her the cod liver oil every day...I cut back on phytic acid rich foods like whole grains...I KNOW what you're thinking...but if you only knew what those whole grains are doing. We discussed the new diet for 15 minutes as she took notes and then she said something she never thought she would say, "I don't see a need to fill these cavities at this time." I've lost 20 pounds while eating a ton of healthy, raw fats!!"

"I bought this book in January 2016, after hearing an interview with Dr. Greger on a podcast. At first I found it hard to read, but not because it difficult or confusing, but because it was changing everything I thought I knew about food. By May 2016 I was miserable with my rash and still sitting at 204 lbs, despite my healthy lifestyle and consuming 1500 calories a day."
"for the person that wants to dig deeper, but in a style that has become uniquely his, Dr Greger uses quoted language from the papers to give an unitimidating explanation of the science contained within. He stands almost alone in a mass media that can't seem to get past the catchy titles, abstracts, and carefully worded, often misleading conclusions. The first 15 chapters (how not to die from..cancers, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, etc..) are arranged based on easy to recognize conditions and though they are related can be read completely independent from one another. The book doesn't follow a chronology, so I found myself flipping through an early review copy reading small sections at a time. He doesn't give in to gluten or coconut oil just because it is popular or profitable and while some might find it frustrating, he sticks to the entire body of evidence not the latest single study. Finally, his "Daily Dozen" is a great place to begin implementing the message of bountiful health he enjoys teaching to anyone that will listen. In spite of all the economic momentum for more profitable and popular food, each year hundreds of articles surface on the benefits of adding more plant-based nutrition to one's diet for health and Dr Michael Greger seems to find them all."
"For the same price that would get me a week in the Caribbean sun, lying on deck of a cruise ship drinking margaritas, listening to reggae music and watching the waves go by, I was going to get a lighted probe stuck up my butt. The closer we stick to that, the healthier we become, and the more our bodies revert to their natural state of robust health rather than the sickly, wimpy physiques resulting from the Standard American Diet (SAD). The books' greatest strength is the thorough and objective research combined with Dr. Greger's ability to break complex and extensive information down into a language that even those of us artsy types who tried to dodge science in school can understand."

Younger Next Year: Live Strong, Fit, and Sexy - Until You're 80 and Beyond
A breakthrough book for men--as much fun to read as it is persuasive-- Younger Next Year draws on the very latest science of aging to show how men 50 or older can become functionally younger every year for the next five to ten years, and continue to live like fifty-year-olds until well into their eighties. The result is nothing less than a paradigm shift in our view of aging. Believing they have a unique approach for improving men's lives, Crowley, a former litigator, and Lodge, a board-certified internist, collaborated to write this "evolutionary" health program. The authors base their plan on the idea that instead of looking forward to decades of pain as the body slowly deteriorates, it's possible to live as if you were 50, maybe even younger, for the rest of your life. More than one-third of the book is devoted to how and why they came up with this program based on their own lives, with special attention to 70-year-old Crowley's impressive abilities (he says he can ski better now than he could 20 years ago). Crowley, his guinea pig, is a firm believer in Dr. Lodge’s science and very good at convincing the reader that, if you’re a fifty-year-old man, you’d be an idiot not to start following the rules as soon as possible.
