Find Best Price at Amazon"I own a cheap Wolfgang Puck cutlery set that I purchased for $35 at Sams Club (which includes the Chef's Knife). I recently purchased a Wusthof Cook's Knife based on America's Test Kitchen recommendation, and I received this Victorinox as a gift. I end up using the Victorinox more than the other knives, because I don't have to worry about the care or damaging it as much since it's a fraction of the price, and it works really well. If I'm cutting up quite a few items, I'll use the Wusthof because the weight does help to make it a little less work in the end."
"They're workhorses that perform nearly as well as - and, depending on the knife - as well or better than high-end forged instruments costing three times as much. Your high-end Japanese or German cutlery will absolutely shame Victorinox Forschner knives in terms of appearance. You will find yourself using far less muscle when slicing things with Victorinox Forschner knives, if you're used to a crappy $50 box set. A: Fibrox is Victorinox' name for a specially-textured handle material, which I'm pretty sure is just a proprietary plastic compound. This is going to sound weird, but Fibrox kind of has the texture of a cat's tongue... meaning it's a little rough. The weird thing about Fibrox - and the one reason - aside from durability and cutting performance - that so many line cooks rely on these, is the fact that they do NOT become slippery when the knife or your hands are damp. That said, you'll find that the Swiss Classic knives are more likely to come as a set, which can save you a little money over buying individually. Put it this way: My wife and I cook dinner 4-5 times per week, and on top of that, these knives also get the brunt of our general, daily use (cutting bread, etc.). You can get a feel for the brand, their handles, and their blades, and then make your future buying decisions with your experience in mind... and if you hate it... then it's not like you're out a ton of money."
"There is a slight antiseptic odour on the handle (already dissipating with just a day's use though) Nice sharp edge and a much lighter blade than my wusthof. Tried to mince some parsely today and the knife didn't do a very good job...cutting board was stained green from the knife crushing the leaves."
Patented Edge Grip feature allows sharpening on the edge of the table or counter top- prevents the tip of larger knives from dragging over the surface of the counter.

"But then I went to the Edgeware website and watched their YouTube video on how to use it, and realized that you may have to pull the knife throught the sharpener up to 10 times to get it sharp. When the sharpener is on the edge, you can pull the knives straight through and down without worrying about hitting the countertop and scratching it or breaking the tip off your knife."
"Like a honing steel, just run the knife over the fine side a couple of times and your ready to cut whatever that is before you."
"Reviews said there was rust on these sharpeners but it is not rust, it is a coating that they add to the blade."
"I use my knives often when cooking and creating recipes for my web site www.hotdishhomemaker.com, so it was important to me to find a product that actually worked."
"I sharpened everything from a pen knife to a machete and it provided a clean sharp edge."
"We've owned an awful lot of sharpeners including some expensive electric ones and this might be the best."

Best Bread & Serrated Knives
Recommended by many leading culinary publications and blogs for its versatility, razor sharp blade, and comfortable handle, this knife has topped dpoundsens of other serrated knives, including ones that are double its price! The sharp points of the serrated edge pierce into hard crusty loaves or soft skinned fruits and veggies to maintain a strong hold and offer better control throughout slicing. The heft helps to make quick work of melon rinds and pineapples, while the razor sharp blade is perfect for slicing delicate eggplants and peaches. At 10 ¼", the blade is long enough to saw through large loaves of bread or cakes, but still has the control needed for cutting smaller items like tomatoes and baguettes. A curved blade allows you to comfortably slice soft fruits and vegetables with a rocking motion, and it has plenty of knuckle clearance which is something a straight bread knife cannot offer. Optimally weighted with high-quality, lightweight European steel reduces hand and wrist fatigue, making it comfortable even after extended use in the home kitchen. Whether a seasoned, or novice home chef, Victorinox Swiss Army offers not only the right tools and the know-how, but most importantly, the confidence to achieve one’s culinary aspirations. There, he and the cutlers’ union he formed produced the finest steel cutlery, finished with the now-famous proprietary edge preferred globally by professional and home cooks. Please NOTE that this item ships with the international item number 5.2933.26 on the blade and not 40547, 45547, 47547.US2, or 47547 but is the same 10.25" Fibrox Pro Bread Knife.

Best Cake Knives
Fat Daddio's professional bread/cake knives are made 16 gauge stainless steel with serrated blades. The length and extra-sharp serrated edge makes this great for torting cakes, slicing bread, or any general kitchen demand.

Find Best Price at Amazon"I have always wanted a knife long enough to cut cakes completely across and slice bread with ease. The handle adds another 5 inches or so to the overall length."
"But I must say this thing is a bit on the gigantic side to not include some sort of sheath... My husband nearly wet himself when he opened the mail and found that I had ordered such a small machete, I mean large bread knife...."
"Nice quality and great for bigger jobs, like creating cake layers, slicing large bread rounds or whole, large fruit (watermelon, pineapple, etc.)."
"I cut through 9" cake without any problems.Highly recommended."
"I needed a good knife to cut though my homemade bread loaves nicely and not tear them to shreds.. After reading the reviews I selected to purchasse the 10" Fat Daddio knife. So if you want a knife that can cut through bread nicely this is the one I would recommend. If I had a large enough slot in my knife block I would buy the 14" also.....but my block is not 100% full."
"We've owned this knife for three years, and it's still extremely sharp (though to be fair, 95% of its use has been cutting cakes, so that has to be taken into consideration)."
"I ordered this to use with my BreadPal slicing guide (sort of a mitre box for bread), which needs a long knife to work well. This knife is so long that it will cut through a thick loaf with only a couple of strokes, reducing the amount of back-and-forth sawing I had to do with shorter knives."
"As with most of my purchases, I read the reviews before adding to the cart. Some of the reviews about this knife mentioned the size."
Best Carving Knives & Forks
“Highly Recommended" by a leading gourmet consumer magazine that features unbiased ratings and reviews of cookware and kitchen equipment, this Slicer is preferred due to its comfortable handle, superior weight and balance, and its ability to precisely slice through meats in one single stroke . Tested against dozens of other slicing knives, some with price tags nearly 3 times the cost of this knife, the 12" Fibrox Pro Slicer is best in class. Optimally weighted with high-quality, lightweight European steel that reduces hand and wrist fatigue, the 12" Fibrox Pro Slicer is comfortable even after extended use. Depending on what is being cut, these grooves will fill with juices or create pockets of air, which decrease friction and prevent food from sticking to the blade. Whether a seasoned, or novice home chef, Victorinox Swiss Army offers not only the right tools and the know-how, but most importantly, the confidence to achieve one’s culinary aspirations. Today, Victorinox Swiss Army still sells a handful of accessories, including the High Heat Turner line, under the Forschner name. "It didn't cut as well as this unit and felt unbalanced, but worse the Hamilton Beach has a blade release button right where one's thumb rests when using the device In my opinion this design is a safety hazard and at a minimum made the knife almost unusable for me. The limitation of this review for the reader is that I've only used the knife at Thanksgiving and Christmas to carve turkeys. "He loves it and uses it for many different things."
"I've tried many, many other sharpeners, including the following, in the last year alone: * Presto 08800 EverSharp electric knife sharpener(and a much more expensive, higher-grade model of the same type, which was a terrible waste of $150+ bucks), * Dremel A679-02 Sharpening Attachment Kit (A total waste of money--don't bother! ), * Smith Abrasives CCKS 2-Step Knife Sharpener and Smith's PP1 Pocket Pal Multifunction Sharpener (Both handy little sharpeners for knives, if you're on the go), and. * Accusharp 012C Combo Pack Knife Sharpener (Does alright in a pinch, but results are minimal; definitely not for regular sharpening duties). The Work Sharp WSKTS Knife and Tool Sharpener beats every other sharpener I've tried. - We've restored most of our old, dinged-up garden tools and shears, (Sadly, I couldn't do them all; I haven't yet discovered a way to sharpen ones with short blades and no way to unhinge/separate the blades from each other. And, instead of dealing with more frustration over yet-another sharpening product that didn't live up to its marketing, I finally have a tool that I KNOW won't ruin my blades, but will instead keep them razor-sharp. - I even sharpened an entire box of old scissors I've ruined over the years trying to sharpen them with other devices...to my awe, scissors that couldn't even cut through paper now cut like new again. And, most surprising: after ALL THAT SHARPENING, the belt I used for it all still looks BARELY USED (I did order Work Sharp Knife & Tool Sharpener (WSKTS) Replacement Belt Kit, thinking I'd need them soon with all the sharpening I needed to do, but these belts are apparently made to last). ***). Anyhow, for lefties, I definitely recommend using it right-handed (in other words: hold the tool with your left hand, and guide the blade with your right), if you can--you'll get much better results, rather than trying to use it the other way around--and you are less likely to apply too much pressure onto the blade, anyway, which could result in an uneven or improperly-angled blade surface."

While the deserts were certainly tasty, the laborious nature of cutting, peeling and coring apples by hand made it almost no longer worthwhile."
"In no time at all and with virtually no effort, it will peel, core, and slice an apple."
"Plus, my parent's peeler was attached to a wooden block, so you had to hold it down when turning the crank because it required too much force to turn."
"My husband’s favorite dessert is apple pie, and for that reason alone I love this Apple Peeler! Occasionally if I push the apple on too hard, or it’s not as ripe, it doesn’t come off quite as easily but it’s still usually quick."
"I recommend this product to anyone with small children or those who do not like the tedious task of slicing and peeling a lot of apples and potatoes."
"Did an excellent job job slicing and coring the first three dozen apples for the dehydrator."
"I love your product!"
"We have used this once so far, his is my first apple peeler and i am over the moon with how easy it is to use and the durability of the product is great!"

Find Best Price at Amazon"In the second, I have cut slices with both the AmazonBasics knife and with the cheap knife I was replacing."
"I have my everlasting and sharp as can be Cutco steak knives. If too pricey, I figured I'd order 10 and make do by pre-slicing some meat. But, you figure I needed these for one night and so long as they didn't disintegrate during the dinner, I figure it's just added cost to the dinner if they should fall apart right afterwards. Imagine my surprise when I open the box to find an actual single-piece construction, a viciously sharp serrated tip/edge and an incredibly sturdy feel in the hand. Now, given that I'm comparing this to steak knives that cost well over $500 for the set ( Cutco: https://www.cutco.com/products/product.jsp?item=4-pc-steak-knife-set ), it's not surprising that Cutco is better in terms of sharpness. Perhaps serrating the edge all the way through would have pushed the price up--in which case, fine, I'll take the first half of the knife. set, getting two of these knives is no problem at all."
"These are a nice weight, but the blade isn't all that sharp, it's the serrations that do the cutting."
"Looks well made,Good price for a set of 8.They do not cut steak very well,More of a rip and tare.Cuts chicken cutlets o.k."
"I'm not sure what it would cost to round the spine and handle scales for a more comfortable fit in the hand, but I would be willing to pay 50% more to get those improvements, plus dishwasher safe."
"I wish they came with a knife block, because they're a little too wide to fit into the block of the knife set I was replacing."
"I can tell they aren't the sharpest steak knives I've used, but these are probably the sales tax of the steak knives that are super sharp."
"I was looking to purchase a set of steak knives and because of the overwhelming great reviews I went ahead and ordered this set."

Find Best Price at Amazon"i cut crusty breads, soft breads, i cut very thin crostini, i cut chunks of focaccia, i cut them hot or cold, often very fast. for the amount of bread i cut, i prefer this heavier duty style, as i know i wont bend or dent it, & i sometimes also use it for rough work like trimming the tough skin off a huge 'leg' of prosciutto, or as a kind of tough wedge for roughly cutting apart a huge wheel of cheese or whole melon, which i do by pushing it through more than sawing."
"That, of course, was my fault and the result of a momentary lack of attention while slicing a loaf of ciabatta bread."
"I had been using a bread knife from a Tramontina set, and while it was not horrible it would tend to tear the bread when it was very fresh. At 10" it is long enough to go through the slicing guide and so sharp it produces slices that look like they were cut by machine."
"Used for carving Thanksgiving turkey."
"Great grip, the blade glides through bread and tomatoes, curved shape means you can more easily cut all the way through something."
"For $17 I figured I'd give this knife a try and if it proved to be inadequate for slicing bread I'd use it for cutting up cardboard boxes. My old bread knife, which had seen better days (cut up too many cardboard boxes), made slicing our bread more of a task than it needed to be."
"I left my cheapo bread knife far up north at a friend's cabin, and found that enough excuse to get this puppy."
"What a great knife for the money."
