It must be sturdy, so the cat cannot easily knock it over, and it should have a favorable scratching material (sisal is preferable). A few notes - you can buy a topper for this scratching post so that your cat has a comfy perch to sit on. I simply got a piece of wood (you can size however you wish, mine is a nice square fit to her size), added a piece of foam and upholstered fabric on top! It might just solve your problem if your cat wont stop scratching all your furniture! One more thing - my cat plays hard on this post and uses it multiple times a day."

My husband said we could get a cat as long as it was female, short haired and stayed fairly small. The cat tree came quickly with Prime shipping and was so easy to put together. Materials - I love the fleece part instead of the ugly orange-brown, shiny carpet that cat trees are usually made with. It's a light pinkish color, and I think it's actually pretty attractive (for a cat tree). Some large bolts, a washer, an alan wrench and 30 minutes (max) later and you're done. It used to have a scratch post and 3 mini scratchers with balls hanging off, but she destroyed that part very quickly. She is obsessed with it, and scratches it intensely every time I go to clean her litter box or feed her. The sisal is finally starting to come undone from the half dome (I’m actually pretty impressed with the quality of that part of the scratcher), so I knew it was time for a new one. I came to Amazon looking for a good deal on a larger scratcher for her, and found this cat tree. I left her alone and came back 10 minutes later and she had already killed one of the toys on the top, so I knew she had at least tried it out, which was reassuring. She was pretty hesitant of it, until I brought it into my bedroom and adjusted the bottom platform. This minor addition wouldn't have cost the company too much, and would have made this cat tree perfect. They basically made an amazing, sturdy cat tree, built for withstanding the brute force of multiple felines, and then included these puny toys. I figure the company threw the toys in as extras, but didn't care much what people thought of them, because even without them the cat tree is great. And since there's a built in loop provided, the owner is free to hang their own cat toys from it anyway, which is pretty cool."

So far the only signs its been used (after about 4 weeks of boisterous tomcat play) are that both of the fuzzy mice are missing their tails, but still attached to the rubber bands, and the roomba has torn up a little of the fabric at the floor level. It may be very tall, but its also wide based and hasn't toppled in spite of some pretty serious brawls over who gets the top cubby hole. So far nothing has worked loose or broken (well except the faux mice on rubber bands, they were torn off and lost long ago, but that was pretty much expected) I haven't had to tighten anything and it STILL hasn't fallen over yet. Wear hasn't progressed much further, though we lost Jabba the Cat and his Blonde brother; one to age and one to the negative side effects of feline obesity. Our "newbies" are very young and boisterous, and in spite of its (for cat furniture) advanced old age; the tree is STILL holding strong. As its now become custom for me to buy and rehang catnip-stuffed furry mice, I actually drilled holes at their mount points to make it easier to purchase new elastic and hang them. One of the "newbies somehow managed to knock the lower ramp off, but I fixed that with a drill and a small carriage bolt."
"The material is not carpet, but a kind of plush covering, but no matter as they use the many sisal posts to scratch on. The underlying material is a kind of particle board vs. plywood, which is great because you can staple lots of other hanging toys from different places. My cats range in weight from 11-13 pounds and it is plenty big enough for them, including the perches. She is a female rescue who has had ongoing lung problems; she was always hiding under beds and avoiding the males which complicated her condition, given that I have tile floors that are impossible to keep dust free. "I secured it using 4 supplied screws that went through the existing track on the slider patio. The existing door lock had to be removed so the door would sit flush against the left side of the wall. The lock on the existing door doesn't work with the pet door, so they supply a lock you can install. Then, when you're sure the lock will be good, you can secure the door to the patio door frame."

NOTE: As to the reviews that state the top part of the box doesn't "snap" down, that is incorrect. I have had ZERO issues with the grooves on the bottom of the pan (but do agree that that is a very poor design). I also find that the litter is so adequate at clumping that the small scoopers and the bottom pan grooves are no problem whatsoever.... My cats are on the small side so these are perfect but I would probably hesitate to buy them if your cat(s) weighs more than about 9 lbs."
"I was having issues with 2 of them - Sammi the Weasel likes to stick her butt out the front of the box and pee all over the floor. Yoda Boda likes to dig a hole to China then scratch the walls down to fill said hole in (this goes on FOREVER) all while making sure everything in 20 foot radius is equally covered in litter for good measure, then he plunks his butt down right in the center to pee before bolting out like lightning just smacked him which serves his nefarious purpose of making litter trails across the entire house as he completely avoids touching down on the litter mats. Sammi the Weasel can no longer shove her butt out the front edge, Pepper Spray doesn't look like an awkward fat-ass stuffed in a tiny box, and Yoda Boda isn't flinging excavation treasures like a Tasmanian devil all over the entire room. If you are looking for a high sided wider one, check out one that looks like a baby bath tub (seriously it does), but you pretty much need fur balls with no litter box issues to brave a non-hood design [if you got one ... you could make a killing in breeding it!]."

They have no bad smell, are easy to spot clean (when coffee is splashed on them), and don't seem to be flattening under my human-sized body.. Oh, and my back and hip seem to be getting better, probably because the cushioning is helping me sleep without aggravating the problem. The conspiracy theorist in me is only slightly suspicious that they have some kind of odorless drug embedded in them that makes me so sleepy (only kidding), because I haven't slept this well in a long time."

"I think the reason is these Solvit Steps have sides to each step and prevent mishaps and stepping off sideways causing a fall.
