However, recently I broke down and bought a an AR-15 due to the urging of friends who explained that the M16 of the 60's is not M16 of today and that the various weaknesses of the earlier rifle have been fixed. It turns out that due to the direct gas impingement method the rifle uses to eject spent cartridges, the interior of this rifle gets caked with carbon which necessitates constant carbon removal from the bolt, the bolt carrier, the firing pin, and sundry other parts, after every shooting session. As a new AR platform owner, I appreciated this very much since I was unsure where the wear points were and/or how much oil/grease to apply to the various areas."
