Find Best Price at Amazon"After researching many other hitch racks, I bought this Pro Series rack for a long trip from Georgia to Utah and back. The "stinger," which is the part that slides into your vehicle receiver hitch, has an upward bend that gives the rack more ground clearance. Another advantage of the extra ground clearance is that the rack sits high enough that it is totally protected by the vehicle. As you drive, the rack is in the vehicle's slipstream, so there's no additional drag that reduces gas mileage as you drive. With some racks, you might risk having the exhaust melt your cargo bag. Buy a locking hitch pin on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009V1WS4/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_10), which is helpful to keep the rack from being stolen while you're spending the night in a hotel. The hitch tightener will prevent that wobble, so as you're driving down the road and hit a rough patch, you won't hear a bumping sound from the hitch rack behind you. Buy a quality cargo carrying bag to use with your rack. The bag also comes with built in lashing straps so you can secure the bag to the cargo rack. If you are looking at other hitch racks, don't get caught up in how much weight they will hold. You will also want to check the tongue weight rating on your vehicle to see if your vehicle can even withstand 500 lbs of tongue weight. As I was driving across the country, I saw many other vehicles with hitch racks."
"This is a very rugged rack."
"I like the tight mesh floor, but if you use the Pro Series 7330 Stretch Net Cargo Net it is hard to get the large plastic hooks into, so I got creative with a combo of hooking to rails and wrapping under to hooks from other side of net."

Salzmann Waterproof Diamond Grade 3M Scotchlite reflective stickers. StowAway Hitch Tightener. Peterson M436B Clear License Plate Light with Steel Bracket. The mounts/clamps for the license plate did not fit snug enough over the square tube, but this was fixed with a small 1-1/2" long piece of serpentine belt placed into one of the side of the mount before placing over the bar."

Folding shank allows carrier to be tilted up when not in use.

"Instructions are small and difficult to read but with a handful of bolts/nuts, common sense will prevail. Although the outside is coated to protect against rust, the inside of the steel tubes are not, and they open ends invite water intrusion. It looks great on the outside, but if I don't address internal rusting it will still look beautiful the day it fails (hopefully not in transit). Doing this, in conjunction with the ratchet straps, did not compromise the Pelican Case's ability to remain water tight. I would recommend against approaching the 350 lbs as a bump in the road can spike the force on the tongue past capacity. Recommendation to the Seller: Cap the open ends of the steel tubes to protect the inside from rust."
"It holds tons of equipment, and I love the rise on the shank to keep the basket at a height that is easier to load, and to avoid scrapes and contact when coming out of a steep parking lot or other change in grade. The center 2" tubular under the grating, the two halves of the basket, and the bent shank. Second, where the two halves join together, there is a flat rectangular plate on either side (one picture shows the Curt sticker). Again, you need another set of hands to force and bend the two halves closer together while you fit the plates and install the bolts. Third, the locking pin holes that secures the carrier in either the 0 or 90 degree position are slightly out of wack. You have to wiggle the carrier back and forth to get the pin to fully engage through the shank and basket. It is a bit disappointing to see something "Made in USA" with this level of quality control."
"Good thing hubby is strong, I don't think I can lift this by myself. The rails are great, bungee cords hook in easily, as do the ratchet style tie downs."
"Sleeping bags, folding chairs, tents, mattresses... And there was room to spare."
"Went and had this assembled at a professional shop which specilises in this stuff and he said this was larger than what they typically carry and that it could hold at least 500 pounds."

"I would say our trip probably put this Keeper to the ultimate test and it passed all without a single scratch. The first obstacle for our Keeper was that our Mazda3 does NOT have sidebars or any rooftop rails, nor did I install any removable or inflatable crossbars. Getting things soaked didn't really bother us since the clothes were all vacuumed sealed but we were worried that water might add extra weight if it's trapped inside. The ONE little inconvenience we had was that water would occasionally drip into the car when it rained very hard because the straps were linked into the vehicle, but that's only because we didn't have sidebars or rails to tie it."

"I purchased some smaller plastic containers to keep things organized and was able to put 3 of them in there along with other duffle bags etc."
"Like other reviewers, I was worried this product would stick out over the front wind-shield, or prevent the back hatch from opening fully."
"It's completely stable at cross country highway speeds, water tight through 12 hours of constant rain and the latches give you a nice affirming close letting you know the box is ready to rock."
"One time I opened it from one side and somehow didn't fully close it right and my husband opened it from the other the next day and because it wasn't closed right the wind blew it all the way up and open and we had to wrestle it closed!"
"Used it for a trip to Disney World and it held all the items for the six passengers."
"Yakima also reimbursed me $9 for a key extraction kit that failed to remove the broken key portion from the original lock handle."
"Yes, it was closed properly and no Yakima won't replace it for free citing that wind is an act of God."

Find Best Price at Amazon"Not knowing, I attached the brackets directly to the bars, loaded the kayaks, strapped them in, and went on a three hour drive across Idaho. On the trip home driving 65mph there were strong crosswinds pressing on the kayaks, so strong that the front aero bar bent up on the left (see photo) and the continued force of the wind caused the right aero bar bracing to slip off the side rail. Thankfully the brace jammed on the inside edge of the side rail instead of flying completely off, and thankfully the Malone racks held strong, and the kayaks remained strapped tight. I pulled over, re-fit the left jammed side brace, moved the rack further out over the right bar bracing, and drove the rest of the way at about 50mph due to the prevailing winds and concern that the bent rack would slip out again."
"I have never had kayak carriers before. From reading reviews about the Malone Load Assist, it seemed to me that individuals that happen to post pictures & had problems did not use Malone kayak carriers."
"Long story short not only did I get it home in one piece but while unhooking it I realized my dad who helped me strap it down had put the tie down strap on the back carrier through a little wire bracket that is only there to keep the tie downs out of the way while loading it and unbelievably it didn't break off. (the tie downs are supposed to go around the actual bar on the rack, it will make sense when you see it in person). And with the convenience of never having to remove them sense they fold down there a definitely worth the extra $50 over the stationary ones."
"I installed these in the dark, with a large number of mosquitoes nipping at me. But I had some very nice Thule straps that have the little "mitten" for the cleat."
"Really wanted to give this a positive review, but the product showed up missing the clamps and bolts needed to actually attach it to my crossbars."
