Find Best Price at Amazon"I began to purchase LED light bulbs as a start, new energy efficient appliances, and then September 2015 the Nest 3rd Generation was released which caught my attention. I asked my father in-law who had the Nest 2nd Generation for information and he had nothing negative to say about it so I was sold. Test your wires one more time prior to uninstalling to make sure no power is running (avoid being shocked or damaging anything). If you have children you can lock it so that a child touching it can not change or disrupt your temperature or any of your settings. Nest will remind you when you should change your air filters on your furnace because it can base it upon how many times it turns on and off. Significant drop in energy consumption can be seen on my gas bill after month 1."
"The nest was not calling for heat and temperature was dropping fast. I called the nest techs which were polite and helpful. They said my nest was wired for a heat pump which I do not have. The nest was properly wired, but when wiring was check via the wi if it said it was erroneously wired for a heat pump."
"** EDIT: I am happy to report that the Nest Thermostat now has a number of options for the Farsight feature, including to display the current room temperature, which I wanted, and to display the weather outside (downloaded from the internet), which is very cool indeed! To charge its batteries, the Nest needs a C (common) wire hooked up; otherwise it tries to charge itself whenever the heating or cooling system is running -- the only time current is passing through it. If I turn the heating system on and set the thermostat to something low, like 60 degrees, so the heat won't ever turn on, the Nest displays "60" rather than the actual temperature in the room. Why should I have to wall-mount a thermometer next to the Nest to replicate its thermometer, just because the Nest programmers won't offer the option to show the current temperature?"

Best Electromechanical Controllers

Designed to work with the wires you already have, Sensi thermostat does not require a common wire (c-wire) in many cases, so it is compatible with most heating and cooling systems* (U.S. and Canada only). Set your Sensi thermostat to automatically adjust your homes temperature for location-based temperature control with geofencing, or quickly create a 7-day schedule to reduce wasteful heating and cooling when no one is home. Integrates with Amazon Alexa for voice control and Wink smart home platforms, and works with Google Assistant and Google Home using the free Wink app.

Find Best Price at Amazon"In my research I learned that my primary complaint the Nest - that the temperature swing was too wide - was addressed by Sensi's "cycle rate" setting. Nest's no-button design is cool, but using a thermostat is not a lecture in UX minimalism, and black-and-chrome doesn't really disappear into the background of my home (white trim and all). Granted, we didn't also install a second Nest to have more temperature sensors, and we didn't buy their $200 talking smoke detectors which also report environmental statistics back to the thermostat. Most people won't care about this but being a network security engineer, I'm impressed that the thermostat has exactly 0 open TCP ports, outbound communication is with one IP, and total traffic is very modest."
"--. I had been wanting to get a WiFi Thermostat for a long time now, but I held off because I was worried that I would buy one that wouldn't be compatible with my home or that I wouldn't be able to figure out how to install it. You select the wires that your current thermostat has, and then the app tells you what to label them and where they will go in the new thermostat. I had never replaced a thermostat before, and it took me under 30 minutes (which includes unboxing, looking for screwdriver, looking for AC unit shut off switch, watching how-to videos included with the app, etc). The app is handy because it also tells you your local Hi and Low temps from the forecast as well as the humidity in your home, upcoming schedule, set temp, actual temp, and the background is either blue, red, or grey depending on if your system is on Cool, Heat, or off at the moment. The only thing this is missing is a few more advanced options for the app, such as specific alerts (like if the temperature is changed manually, I would like to be able to get an instant alert on my phone) and an air filter change reminder that can be set for a certain amount of time (like 1, 2, or 3 months)."

Find Best Price at Amazon"note : Picture of base if from my old unit, just posted to show wires, Red Wire is power, Green wire is Fan, Yellow is A/C and white is Heater."
"Biggest loss with this step-down is the lack of an automatic transition between heating and air conditioning, but I knew that going in."
"The "smart thermostat" devices were out of the question, too many reliability and security issues, expensive, and honestly really pointless loading apps onto cell phones etc., to do what haa! The great thing is no matter what if I lose power due to an outage no settings are lost and it restarts plain and simple."
"If you have a complex system, the manual has a chart that lists different wire color combos but it's the type of info that I'm not rated to understand. If you know what a changeover valve is and the difference when it's energized in heating or in cooling, or what an auxiliary heat relay is vs what an emergency heat relay is, then you can use the data provided."
"Originally had a simple thermostat which stopped working and our oil company installed a fancy model which drove me crazy."
"Only now, the temperature number looks weird - there's a number there, but it looks like it's preceded by a + or -, and I can't really tell what the setting is, so I don't know what temperature the house is supposed to be."
"Backlight feature is really nice as it allows u to see the settings easily something many even more expensive units will not do."
"It took me about 2 hours to install but only because I did not realized that I had dropped a small brass jumper piece which belonged with the new thermostat."
